Need to reindex folder but get a message saying it is open

Hi, I deleted some large files in one mailbox and got a message saying to reindex it. However, reindexing then says the folder is open and has to be closed first. How do i do this?

If working in preview mode switch back to non-preview mode (there's a button for doing so on preview window's own toolbar) and restart Pegasus Mail.

If this doesn't work there's a tool for folder handling in Pegasus Mail's ..\programs\ subdirectory called mbxmaint_ui.exe you may use after shutting down Pegasus Mail. It'll tell you what to do after launching and selecting the Compact tab. Before doing so you need to figure out the repective folder's filename by right-clicking it in folder tree view and selecting "Folder information" in the upcoming context menu: You can then highlight and copy the name to clipboard. It also displays the path to its location.

Hi Michael, Thanks for replying.

I couldn't find the switch in the Preview window to trun it off. I tried disabling it from the Folder tab, but then couldn't get the reindexing to work, as it still said it was Open.

I tried the second method using mbxmaint_ui.exe with Pegasus closed and it didn't do anything. I also tried the Repair tab for that, but it gave an error67f13a737d79c

And don't forget to close any other Pegasus Mail windows and restart it after doing so since preview mode might otherwise open a folder automatically on launch. Open reader windows are also bound to their folders being accessed.

I also tried the RepaiSor tab for that, but it gave an error

So the question is whether there is either a second (invisible) instance of Pegasus Mail running or another application blocks access (like anti-malware or AV programs).

  • The first one needs to be investigated using Windows task manager: Right click the Windows task bar for launching it and check for any winpm-32.exe entries on its Details tab and terminate such a task from the context menu after right-clicking it.

  • The second one needs to whitelist your mailbox directory in the respective scanner's options. Mailbox directory paths can be retrieved from the Info screen showing up after clicking Pegasus Mail's main toolbar Help menu, selecting About Pegasus Mail ... and using the Info button at the dialog's bottom: There will be two entries displaying the Home and the New mailbox paths: If they differ use the one containing your folder file.

Recall at one time had an user with a folder that would not reindex.
Solution was to do following steps.
With Pegasus closed, rename the matching folders PMI file (Index File).
Then start Pegasus and click on the Folder. Pegasus then creates a new PMI (Index File).
You keep all the messages, since they are in the PMM file, but all setting like read/unread are lost.

At that point, if it is better, you can delete the backup of the PMI file, and if it is worse, can restore the backup.

Think some corruption to the PMI file doesn't allow Pegasus to fix it, but creating a new one if missing works.

My suggestion is to replace the problem folder with a new one:

  • create a new folder
  • copy all of the messages from the bad folder to the new folder
  • confirm that was successful
  • restart Pegasus Mail
  • confirm all is well with the new folder
  • delete the old folder
  • rename the new folder to the old folder name if that is important
  • edit any associated filtering rules so that they point to the new folder. Do this even if you renamed it to match the old one.

Thanks for pointing out the List button, Michael - I didn't know what it did. I changed it to List, closed Pmail and tried again and had the same problem of not being able to reindex. Tried a second time and, this time, it put up a message that the folder was damaged and to reindex it, so I did and it's worked!

I'd also already tried Brian Fluet's method, but, on copying the files across, it put up this strange message (I've almost 500 Gb free on this drive). Anyway, despite the message, it copied all but 2 messages the first time and 8 the second time.67f26d940e82a .

Anyway, it's sorted now, so thanks to everyone

By the way, I couldn't reach the site this morning

Edit. Oh, bollocks, it's back and there is no winpm-32.exe running in Task Manager.

This is what shows up in About Pegasus Mail/Info

I might just leave it - it's not my current mailbox

This might happen once in a while because David Harris is currently doing some maintenance and relocation work with his sites.

And with regard to your configuration data I don't see anything you would need to change or take special care of.

I wonder if you might have hit the 2GB file size limit on that folder file.

Just for info. I have setup that checks status of various sites including community.pmail.com every to minutes.
Is run from machine using GMT +1000 so times are Guam Time.
Shows it went Down at arount 7:08pm 4/6 and backup by 8:37pm.
So about 1:30 give or take 10 minutes. So, wasn't a long time.

Hi Brian, It's 890 Mb. Also, it will happily copy all the files except 2-6 on top of the ones I did copy, making 9000 plus in total.. I think I might leave it, as it's not my current mal folder, as I spent all of yesterday running into "Can't find source files" in DSIM Restorehealth, a failed repair install from a repair file and doing a complete repair from an iso, so I'm off Windows for a bit and going back to my adventure in Zorion Linux.
Thanks anyway
