Pegasus Help stoppped working properly

Help pop-ups are no longer appearing as they should. When I pick a menu item (eg Specific Help) in the Help menu no pop-up appears. Another blank Pegasus tasks seems to open on the task bar called "Pegasus Mail Help System" but it is blank and won't open when I click on it.

I am running Windows 10, Pegasus 4.81

There is an entry in a file named STATE.PMJ that stores the Help system's window position and size when it was last used. Perhaps that got corrupted, or maybe the Help system was last opened on a second monitor that is not connected. Regardless, you can remove that entry and Pegasus Mail will then open the Help system window in its default location and size. That entry is PMHELP5=.

The STATE.PMJ file is located in your mailbox directory. It is a plain text file so can be edited with a text editor like Notepad. The process is as follows:

  • Close Pegasus Mail.
  • Make a safety copy of the STATE.PMJ file.
  • Open STATE.PMJ with a text editor and delete the entry that starts with PMHELP5=. Don't leave a blank line in its place.
  • Start Pegasus Mail and test the Help system. It should display on screen now.

Post back if need help identifying your mailbox directory.

Not sure why this is happening, but solution seems simple.
With Pegasus Closed open the STATE.PMJ file in the MAIL directory.
Usually C:\PMAIL\MAIL or C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN

Open with a regular text file program like notepad.
Find this line with PMHELP5=
Should have the same part up to the first ", but then probable a negative number inside quotes.

PMHELP5=0,0,0,0,"196 117 854 600 272"

In a test just changed it to
PMHELP5=0,0,0,0
and saved the STATE.PMJ

Afterwards opened the Pegasus, and help then shows up.
Dragged the Window to resize it a little and then exited Pegasus.
Then check line and it was saved as
PMHELP5=0,0,0,0,"196 117 854 600 272"
You might get slightly different values, but can resize to whatever you like.

Not sure what is causing it to get a negative value in window, but that seems to be an easy fix.

I'm not sure if the negative number is the cause, but in any case, if that is the case, the most likely cause may be the use of a second monitor.

I'm not currently using dual monitors, but when I was, I found that Pmail doesn't cope well with a second monitor. When a window is moved to a second monitor, its window coordinates become negative. I stopped using Pegasus on the second monitor because it couldn't remember the new location. Besides that, if the main window was on the second monitor, warnings and error messages would be displayed on the main monitor and such, which was annoying.

While I wouldn't claim that this is the case here, I would say it's quite likely. That said, I'm not comfortable sorting these problems by editing control files. There should be a better way.

Editing the State file worked. I deleted the PMHELP5 line as recommended.

Note: The PMHELP5 parameter only reappears in the STATE file after I move the help window, and close Pegasus. It is not reinserted when I first open Pegasus, pop up help and then close Pegasus without moving the help pop-up.

Thinking back, I believe the help pop-up problem originated when I used a second monitor in a rare, special situation.

Thank you to all who responded.

I just figured out a way to bring an off-screen help file on-screen in Windows 11. It's not easy or intuitive.

  • Hover over the "Pegasus Mail Help System" entry in the Taskbar.
  • Right-click in the window preview that appears (hopefully you don't have this disabled in Win11), select the "Move" option.
  • Move your cursor away from the taskbar and notice that it has turned into a cross with arrows on all ends.
  • Tap one of your keyboard arrow keys and notice your cursor return to normal.
  • On movement you will see that you are dragging a minimized Help system window.
  • Left-click to drop the minimized window.
  • Grabs its corners to stretch it to the desired size. Position it as desired.

Edit: In Windows 11, the options for Tiling and Cascading windows from the taskbar context menu have been removed hence the need for this convoluted method. I assume the context menu windows management options in Windows 7 and 10 will get it back on screen much easier.

THANK YOU!!

Yesterday I spent over an hour trying to figure out how the Move system menu option was supposed to work. I swear I never imagined you had to press an arrow key! Wow! This is a must-have tip.
