New Gmail Problems

My main email account is on Gmail. Starting on 8/29, I started to have a weird problem. When running PMAIL on my Windows computer, every time I download my new messages, I get multiple copies of the same messages, over and over again. It takes a lot of time to go through all of them and leave one copy to actually read. And then, the download does the same thing again. Again, the emails being retrieved are from 8/29 on.

I also use email on my Android mobile phone to retrieve the same messages, but the problem does not occur.

What is going on?

That is a good question. One thing I am pretty certain about is that your phone is not downloading messages but is using IMAP to connect to Gmail. As for the duplicate downloads, IDK. My primary personal email account is also a Gmail account and I am not experiencing the same issue.

Although Pegasus Mail has a mechanism that keeps track of previously downloaded mail, Gmail also keeps track. Two things come to mind to check.

  1. In your Gmail POP3 host configuration file, check the download controls to confirm that the "Download only "Download only unread mail..." option is ticked.
  2. There is a POP3 configuration option on the Gmail end that you can check.

Brian,

As usual, thanks for your quick and thoughtful reply.

I checked both POP3 configuration files. I usually leave the new mail on the Gmail server so that I can also retrieve them on my mobile phone, but I changed the configuration as you suggested. It didn't help the problem. All emails from 8/29 - 9/2 were continually downloaded multiple times. However, emails from 9/3 wouldn't download at all to my desktop.

So, out of desperation, I opened up Gmail in my browser and manually marked all of the emails for the problematic date range as already read. This didn't help, so I manually deleted all of those emails from the server. I also restored the POP3 configuration files to their original state. And this fixed the problem.

I don't know what happened, but somehow the emails from those dates must have not been getting marked as already retrieved.

So, I'm back in business.

Thanks again.
