constant error while creating an entry for SMTP server

Hi

Can anybody help with SMTP servers for an IMAP account? I tried many times and got always the same error message, saying:
"The e-mail address you have entered does not contain an '@' symbol, which means that it is probably incorrect."

But as you can see at this screenshot actually there is a symbol @ in the address I entered. What's wrong?

Thanks!

The screenshot did not upload possibly because of the file type, certain of which are blocked from upload. You can try again using a different file type. When it works, you will see the image in the "live preview" pane on the right.

In the meantime, you say "SMTP servers for an IMAP account". This is vague. "IMAP" is not an account type, it is a protocol used to access a hosted account. "SMTP" is a protocol for sending mail, usually by using the SMTP server of the account host.

Creating an SMTP host account is done in Tools > Internet options > Sending (SMTP) tab. Before doing that you need to open the General tab and put your email address in the "My Internet e-mail address is:" field. After that, open the Sending tab and click the Add button. Here is where you can create a new sending configuration or can edit an existing one. We call these an SMTP host configuration file or SMTP definition).
In the General tab you must give it a name (your choice), enter the server host name (usually something like smtp.domain.com), and enter the TCP/IP port number required by the smtp host server.
In the Security tab you must select the SSL/TLS security type required by the host server. You must also configure the SMTP Authentication. Since you are not using POP3, the only option is the second one. Populate those fields according to the credentialling requirements of the host server. Normally this is your full email address as the username name although that is not always the case, and of course your password.

You don't say who your email host is so be aware that Gmail requires special handling, and Microsoft hosted accounts are not supported due to their OAUTH2 requirement.

Thank you for the fast reply. This forum blocked indeed the image I added to my original post, since I had no enough posts count. Here is the link to my image again. As you can see, the issue related to GMX.com. I tried to create a SMTP server using the method you described in your post, but it did not work.

The image you posted points to the name of the SMTP host definition. That has nothing to do with the email address that is triggering the error. I have a gmx.com account so give me a few minutes to take some screen shots of my configuration. I will either edit this post to add them or included them in a new reply.

Here you go...

Internet Options General tab (Disregard my 5 second timeout value. Leave it at the default of 30):

Host definition General tab:

Thank you very much! I entered the values exactly as on your screenshots, and this time I got no any error messages during the process.

However, the next problem arose immediately. When I try to send an outgoing message using this SMTP server, I get every time the error message (handshake error) - please look at the screenshot below.

The full text of the error message in this window (including the part which is not visible on the screenshot) is the following:

Did you ever see anything like that? It says the IP-address is block listed, but I suppose it is not correct and actually something else causes this error.

The "554-No SMTP service" entry tells me that whatever GMX server you are hitting with the "mail.gmx.com" hostname does not service SMTP. I suggest researching the GMX SMTP requirements for your area to see if they are different than what works for me here in the U.S.

Also, that last I knew, GMX also worked with TLS security so you might run the following test:

In the General tab of the host definition, change the port to 587.
In the Security tab of the host definition, select "Via STARTTLS".

Your IP address may indeed be on a block list based on this GMX website about their error messages:
https://postmaster.gmx.net/en/error-messages

I do not have any idea about how you can fix this. Maybe GMX support could help????

Thank you, I tried this combination, but it did not help. too.
I wrote to GMX customer support, let's see what they will answer.

In the meanwhile could you help me with another issue. In the dialog [Internet Mail Options] we can create many SMPT servers sets. But when I have multiple different postboxes in Pegasus Mail, how should I set a certain IMAP postbox to use a specific SMTP server from this list (as for example GMX SMTP server) to send messages? I have the experience with some other mail clients, including Thunderbird and MS Outlook, but Pegasus obviously uses a different approach. I did many tests and read the manual, but was not able to find any clear explanation.

Two concepts to consider within Pegasus Mail are "Users" and "Identities".

Separate Pegasus Mail "Users" means that the mail and the configuration settings are in individual running instances of Pegasus Mail. So, if you have three hosted email accounts, you could have three Pegasus Mail Users, each would only configuration settings and email specific to that Users. It is still just one Pegasus Mail program installation, but you can run multiple instances as different Users by using a combination of different command line options

Pegasus Mail "Identifies" are unique configuration sets within one running instance of Pegasus Mail. With Identities, all mail activity is visible within them however you can specify different configuration options for each one, like which SMTP host to use. You can easily switch between Identities and can assign a default Identity to an IMAP mailbox.

In summary, "Users" allow you to keep each one completely separate from the others while "Identities" allows you to switch between different configurations within the same running instance of Pegasus Mail.

Any additional questions about Users and Identities would best be asked in a new topic.
