Rolf wrote: "I think you first need to verify that  220.112.193.167 is your current IP"

I can see your IP changes frequently. Currently your MX points to conneally.net, and conneally.net has an A record for 220.112.193.167. This would work, as long as that was your current IP, which it isn't. So somehow your dyndns isn't updating your current A record for conneally.net

Regarding the port forwarding:

First test and verify that you can reach MercuryS from your own network, by using telnet as you did: telnet:192.168.1.100:25. If you do not get a response here, something within your machine is blocking inbound traffic (f.ex. windows firewall or another port blocking software)

Secondly, test and verify that you can telnet from the outside through your ADSL modem port forward based on IP number, telnet:116.25.87.49:25

Lastly, check that the DNS matches your current IP. You can easily do this with nslookup from a command  window. And when this works, telnet:conneally.net:25 and you should be through the hardest parts.

Firstly, thanks for the help in the previous postings.

I have a very simple system - a laptop at my home running windows xp & outlook. There are two mail accounts set up in outlook & download email without problem.

Recently I registered my family name domain i.e. conneally.net & thought it would be good to be able to send/receive email with this address george@conneally.net - I am a single user - no staff etc etc & would like to do this for free!

So with this simple objective in mind I started to investigate & found that my domain registration company did not offer "an SMTP as part of its email services". Nor did my ISP - actually I don't know if this is true but as I live in China I assumed this to be the case & it would anyway be next to impossible to organize for me. Dealing with an isp here is quite difficult so lets forget that option!
The above being the case I assumed (correctly or not???) that I needed to look for another way.

The first was to employ the service of a small programme called "Free SMTP Server". After purchasing a POP3 mailbox from my reg. company I configured outlook to send/receive emails. This does not work very well (incoming intermittent) & more importantly is restricted to 5 outgoing emails per day - not much good really.

Second option was to install my own mail server. Mercury was the one most mooted on the net. After several postings here it seemed apparent that I needed to employ the services of DynDNS (or the like) to handle DNS issues.

My original objective (see above) seemed simple but is not the case & to my surprise attracts a cost to achieve. naively I thought email was free!

Anyway, I hope this is an overview of the situation to date & makes sense. Any ideas or suggestions welcome! Is Mercury the way to go? Is there a better SMTP server out there (although I have looked & they all seem to have restrictions)?

thanks again guys

Well now, since this is the community of Pegasus Mail and Mercury Mail Transport, I think it would be rude against the author that we here promote other email servers, that are free, unlimited in their capacity, with full filtering, and a feature set that is among the top smtp-server engines around.

We're down to that for email to work with your own domain, the rest of the world needs to find your smtp-server. This is done via DNS regardless of the server of choice.

Hello,

I have begun to configure mercury - module p, e & d. not sure if i am going at this the right way but i've tried to now configure outlook at connect with mercury. when i test it i get an error saying server was found & to verify port & ssl information. after checking, the ports are in 110 & out 25. have left the ssl boxes unticked.

the server info i configured in outlook is www.conneally.net for both incoming & outgoing mail server.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance

Here are some things to check:

- There doesn't seem to be any MX record for the domain at present. If there is no MX the default is to instead use the host associated with conneally.net for mail.

-  www.conneally.net is a CNAME record (alias) pointing to the A record (host) conneally.net

-  conneally.net resolves to 220.112.193.167, but there is presently no ping response from that IP number

- If you are connecting with Outlook from your local network to Mercury your Internet router/modem may not allow you to connect to the external IP address. In that case you should use the local IP address of the server. If you run Outlook on the same computer as Mercury use the localhost loopback address (127.0.0.1).

You should use MercuryP, MercuryE and MercuryS.

S=SMTP, inbound email coming from any server, and outbound email coming from your own pc.

E=EndToEndSMTP, send the Outbound email to the recipient

P=POP3, the server you connect to from Outlook to get your email.

On your client machine, first make sure that you can communicate with www.conneally.net from outlook. When this works, worry about inbound email coming to your server - as Rolf has pointed out above.

guys, fumbling along nicely here! sure i'll get it sorted.

as recommended i set outlook to "loopback address" (127.0.0.1). mecury & outlook on same laptop. the situation is now that i can send email from outlook but not receive. i'm not really sure how to go about troubleshoot this issue now.

in mercury i have "set up" modules p/e/s - i think they are ok.

my mx setting with dyndns are hostname: conneally.net  5  mail exchanger: conneally.net

thanks in advance

MX record is OK now. Host conneally.net resolves to IP 220.112.193.167. Host is up (ping response OK), but the SMTP port for mail (port 25) is apparently not open.

So you should:

- verify that your present IP actually is 220.112.193.167

- if it is, check if there might be some firewall blocking port 25

- if not, check that the Mercury SMTP server module is running and answering on port 25

Hi

still having a problem!

I ran this command - telnet://mx1.hotmail.com:25 & got a response which began 220............from some searching on the net i believe this shows that port 25 is not being blocked???

the only firewall i am aware of is the xp built in firewall but i don't see any issue here with blocking port 25. My mercury smtp server is "listening on tcp/ip port" =25

As suggested i have set my incoming & outgoing mail servers in outlook to 127.0.0.1

to find my ip address i do a ipconfig /all & check there. correct? this is 192.168.1.100 - this is not the same as shown in rolf's last post! is because my pc is issued new ip each session. right?

i have contacted my isp (greatwall - china) who assure me port 25 is not blocked.

i connect through a wireless router tp-link tl-wr543g - could this be the issue?

note: when i test in outlook - "test account settings" this all checks out - but checks out very quickly, nearly instantly, unlike other accounts i check. also when i hit "send/recieve" this goes through ok. but no mail arrives in outlook. activity in mercury p: connection from 127.0.0.1 sun dec xxxxxxxx user george,(2) 0 messages 0 bytes 0 sec elapsed, connection closed sun decxxxxxxx

i will contact greatwall (isp) again but any other suggestionds appreciated.

The 192.168.1.100 is in an IP range reserved for local networks (192.168.*.*), it's not your public IP. So that presumably means that your router performs address translation (NAT). This is good for security, but you will need to redirect port 25 from that device to port 25 on your server (192.168.1.100).

hi guys

spent most of today with the Tp-Lnk guy here in China. Not easy! Not having much Chinese myself. He suggested to configure port forwarding on my router which has been done.

Sill no joy

The people at dyndns guess its a configuration problem with mercury & once port 25 'answers' it will be solved. Simple eh!

i've had another go at mercury but dont see any issue. Any suggestions appreciated.

This is what I get from checkdns.net:

DNS server ns1.mydyndns.org[63.208.196.92] is alive and authoritative for domain conneally.net

DNS server ns2.mydyndns.org[204.13.249.82] is alive and authoritative for domain conneally.net

DNS server ns3.mydyndns.org[204.13.250.82] is alive and authoritative for domain conneally.net

DNS server ns4.mydyndns.org[213.155.150.206] is alive and authoritative for domain conneally.net

DNS server ns5.mydyndns.org[203.62.195.76] is alive and authoritative for domain conneally.net

  5 server(s) are alive

CheckDNS.NET checks if all NS have the same version

All 5 your servers have the same zone version 2007112707

CheckDNS.NET verifies www servers

  Checking HTTP server www.conneally.net [220.112.193.167]

Error connecting to HTTP server www.conneally.net[220.112.193.167] port 80 : Connection refused.

CheckDNS.NET tests mail-servers

Domain conneally.net has only one mail-server

  Checking mail server (PRI=5) conneally.net [220.112.193.167]

Error connecting to mail server conneally.net[220.112.193.167] port 25 : Connection refused.

Some of your MX do not work properly

I think you first need to verify that  220.112.193.167 is your current IP. Use your browser to go to whatip.org, for instance, and see what is says.

If the IP is correct, Mercury is running on port 25 and that port has been forwarded from the router to your server it means that something is blocking port 25, either in the router or in your computer.
