Recovering deleted users

I assume you are using a standard 8 character ASCII username.  Are you using v4.62?  Are you using the CTRL+Configuration+Manage local users?  If so I do not really know why this is not working since I just did it with no problems at all. My only guess would be that there is some sort of system rights problem.

I have just deleted a user by mistake. Is there anyway I can recover the data for this user?

Can I still find them in some .temp file?

I would greatly appreciate your help.

Hi

It depends on how you deleted the user. When I used Pegasus Mail's User Management option to delete users, I discovered that the username was deleted from the pmail.usr file only, and that the user's folder still existed. Check the pmail folder (or whatever it may be called), that holds each users account data and see if it still exists. If it does then open the pmail.usr file located in the root of that folder with a text editor and put the user back in it.

Good luck

Hi Greenman

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, the folder of the user I have accidentally deleted using Pegasus Mail's User Management is still there but it is empty, all the emails are gone. The user I could put back in but I really do not know where to look to find the missing emails. Do you have any additional suggestion?

Thank you very much

Susanna

<smart arse mode on>

You will find them in your backup of your mail folders [:P]

<smart arse mode off>

If it was stored on the local drive, then check the Recycle Bin (you might be lucky).

If it was stored on a network share then it is gone.

If the disk has not been written to (or defragged! [8o|]) much since the delete you MAY have some luck with a file recovery prog. (e.g. http://www.aumha.org/a/recover.php)

I am a new user of Pmail. Using User Management, I tried to delete one of three users; somehow all the users got deleted. Fortunately all my email is still on the ISP server, so I may just uninstall and reinstall. This occured on my Vista laptop. I have had crazy things happen with various programs on this Vista Home operating system. I am so disgusted with Microsoft; which is the reason I refuse to use Outlook.

I've never heard of that happening, however i do not have Vista and I certainly can believe Vista could do this.  I assume that you have installed WinPMail to c:\pmail as multiuser and so have the directories c:\pmail\mail and c:\pmail\programs in that directory.  Go to the c:\pmail\mail directory with "My computer" and check for the user mail subdirectories and the file pmail.usr .  Maybe you have only lost the file pmail.usr and the user mail directories still have their mail.

I have another related question to this thread - if I delete a user from Mercury but wanted just to re-add that same user back (which is what I am trying) - why does it not allow me to do so?

 It does not give me an error message - it just does not allow it to happen.

 Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Erik
