apache.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows

I've given up at the moment on putting htdocs on the Netware volume.  Perhaps I'll try again later but at the moment I'm leaning toward reducing the dependence on Netware in case of a future upgrade to another server O/S.

Ok.  I've got Mercury/32 v4.52 running nicely on a Windows 2000 box I built just for that purpose.
On a second Windows 2000 box I'm trying to get Apache up and running for the purpose of using it for SquirrelMail.
For the past 5 years or so I've been using Tiny Web Server by Rit Labs on a Windows NT box.  It's been great and basically unhackable due to it being "read only" in nature.  I've got all my http docs on SYS:WWW/ROOT and Tiny Web Server is perfectly happy with that.
Any and all attempts to get Apache to look at the SYS volume have failed with the above error message.  I've tried several different builds of Apache and I've tried various folder names.  The only thing in common is if the http docs are on the Novell server volume, Apache refuses to run.  Is there some trick to doing this?
I'm using the Novell Client32 v4.90 on the Windows 2000 box, currently logged in as Administrator for testing purposes.

For the record, I found a message thread on the Apache support archive from 1999 discussing this problem.  It is caused by running Apache as a service and the solution is to run it as an application.
Has anyone found a way to run Apache as a service using a Netware drive for htdocs?

I'm hazarding a guess here, but I suspect this is because Apache is running under the Local System Account on the Windoze box. Maybe if you create a user specifically for running the Apache server, and in the Log On tab in the Service Properties dialog, set it as the account that the Apache service will run under.  Then make sure the account has access rights to your htdocs folder on the Netware drive.

I'm not sure if this will work though, as there still may be issues stemming from Apache loading before the Netware Client has had a chance to load.
