Change to router stopped smtp mail receipt

"Is the mail being sent to  user@broadoak.co.uk then being redirected to Mercury as SMTP mail?"

  • Yes exactly that.

"If so have you told the router to send all mail for port 25 to the LAN IP address of the system running Mercury/32? "

  • This has now been done - it works fine ... and I now know a lot more about how the router works.

Many thanks for your help and a Happy New Year to you.

A single user I have a hosted domain for which mail is sent to me by SMTP and for which I have used Mercury – currently 4.01b - and of course Pegasus Mail. This has worked well for years using dial up and ADSL modems.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I changed my Speedtouch ADSL modem to a Netgear router with wireless adapter. This led to being unable to receive SMTP mail although sending it was OK.  This happens when the router is used direct or in wireless mode.

Using another mail account, POP3 mail is sent and received via Mercury without problems.

On reverting to the Speedtouch modem normal receipt and delivery works fine.

No changes were made to Mercury settings.

I was going to upgrade to Mercury 4.51 but would like to resolve this problem first.

Any ideas please?

First thing that comes to mind is that you are blocking port 110 outbound so yuo can't make the connection to the POP3 host.  Have you tried doing a session log?  Telnet from the Mercury/32 system to the POP3 host port 110?

Telnet to host via 110 gave result OK.

One huge log created on day of change over. 238k text file!  Seems to be a dump of everything over the last 3 years.

PC having trouble reading it.  Running Win XP on Dell Dimension 2.8Ghz - not the latest but quite capable.

Switching between modem and router shows the modem is OK and the router still blocks the SMTP mail.

I'm confused, could you provide some specific for testing?  SMTP mail comes inbound via port 25, POP3 downloads require a outbound 110 connection but the download comes in via other ports. What specifically are you trying to do?

Mail is received SMTP from an externally hosted web alias - broadoak.co.uk.  It is this SMTP mail which is not received when using the router.

The IP address in the mercury core module configuration is 127.0.0.1

Using the telnet test on port 25 to the host server had no problems.

I am receiving POP3 mail via mercury from another email account with no problems.

Hope that this clarifies it a little.

Still no clear to me at least.  Is the mail being sent to  user@broadoak.co.uk then being redirected to Mercury as SMTP mail?  If so have you told the router to send all mail for port 25 to the LAN IP address of the system running Mercury/32?

FWIW, the 127.0.0.1 address (local host) only has meaning locally.  The router needs to know the local IP address of the system, usually a 192.168.1.x address and you must not be using DHCP to get this address from the router.
