I can download mail but when I try to send mail I get the following message: 15: Peer connect failure (the host has refused the connection).

I have checked and double checked my internet options settings. They are the same on my desktop and 2 laptops. All exhibit the same problem. They all receive mail but cannot send. I have spoken with my ISP three times today (Earthlink) but no luck.

Turn on session logging, send a message and post the results. Make sure you munge your password.

I looked at the session log but there is no password showing up. When and how do I "munge" (make unrecognizable?) a password?

This is not a session log from WinPMail. Go to File | Network configuration | General and turn on "Create Internet session logs (advanced diagnostic use only)"

Checking this control tells Pegasus Mail to create special log files that show the entire exchange of information between it and the servers it connects to. Each session will be created in a file called TCPxxxx.WPM in your home mailbox directory (the "xxxx" is replaced by four digits). Creating session logs will slow down the performance of your system somewhat, and you should be aware that any username and password information exchanged between Pegasus Mail and the server will be shown in the log, *even* if you use SSL to secure the connection. Session logs are primarily useful if you need to debug a problem between Pegasus Mail and one of the servers it connects to - you should enable the option only on instructions from a system administrator or from Pegasus Mail technical support. [ Technical note: this control has the same effect as using a "-Z 32" commandline switch when you run Pegasus Mail ]

You can now try again to send/receive the mail and then look at the resulting TCP/IP debug file. Review of this file will tell you exactly what is going on between WinPMail and the server.

Thomas,

I think the problem has been solved. Last night I tried all three authentication options and nothing worked. This morning, after I received your e-mail I looked at the settings for my other profile. Then I went and looked at the problematic profile and noticed that in option 2 settings that the user name was missing "@mindspring.com". Somehow that got knocked off. Anyway, it seems to be working now.

Thank you for all your help and patience.

I spoke with Earthlink about 4 times yesterday. The first three technicians told me that they do not know anything about Pegasus Mail, and therefore do not support it. Interestingly enough, the fourth technician did have a version of Pegasus from the 3.something series. Someone with initiative! I suggested to her that she download the latest version.

Thanks again,

Bob Mulder

When session logging is turned on all TCP/IP activity is logged to a file called TCP????.WPM in your HOME mail directory. The ? Is replaced by hex digits 0-F. Use Help | about Pegasus Mail | Info and note the HOME mail directory name and then use "My computer" and go to that directory and open the log file with Notepad or similar.

Now what? Sue

Here is my session log. It's the packet number that seems to be causing the problem with the smtp server.

--- Fri, 19 Mar 2010 11:55:27 ---

Connect to 'authsmtp.ku.edu' port 465, timeout 90.

11:55:28.528 [*] Connection established to 129.237.34.119

11:55:28.621 22: Error -32 activating SSL session (locus 6014, type 4, code 0, 'Unexpected packet type 50, expected 22')

11:55:28.621 --- Connection closed normally at Fri, 19 Mar 2010 11:55:28. ---\0A\0A

--- Sat, 20 Mar 2010 07:51:09 ---

Connect to 'pop.ku.edu' port 110, timeout 90.

07:51:09.083 [*] Connection established to 129.237.34.118

07:51:09.129 >> 0100 +OK Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 POP3 server version 6.5.7638.1 (exch3-fe-03.home.ku.edu) ready.\0D\0A

07:51:09.129 << 0014 USER suemohr\0D\0A

07:51:10.223 >> 0005 +OK\0D\0A

07:51:10.223 << 0015 PASS HNpdl44$\0D\0A

07:51:10.348 >> 0034 +OK User successfully logged on.\0D\0A

07:51:10.348 << 0006 STAT\0D\0A

07:51:10.441 >> 0009 +OK 0 0\0D\0A

07:51:10.441 << 0006 QUIT\0D\0A

07:51:10.691 >> 0080 +OK Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 POP3 server version 6.5.7638.1 signing off.\0D\0A

07:51:10.691 --- Connection closed normally at Sat, 20 Mar 2010 07:51:10. ---\0A\0A

--- Sat, 20 Mar 2010 10:16:28 ---

Connect to 'authsmtp.ku.edu' port 465, timeout 90.

10:16:29.662 [*] Connection established to 129.237.34.119

10:16:29.740 22: Error -32 activating SSL session (locus 6014, type 4, code 0, 'Unexpected packet type 50, expected 22')

10:16:29.740 --- Connection closed normally at Sat, 20 Mar 2010 10:16:29. ---\0A\0A

Now what? Connect to 'authsmtp.ku.edu' port 465, timeout 90.

Looks like you are trying to do direct SSL and this server appears to only do STARTTLS. Go the the SMTP setup and change to the STARTTLS on port 25.
