Mercury 4.52 Sending blank E-mails

The outgoing e-mail still goes to Mercury, although the definition in Pegasus correctly specifies my ISP's mail server. Even disabling MercuryC doesn't address this - e-mail still goes to Mercury.

I have checked the "Use in preference to LAN mailer" box in Pegasus, and that seems to have done the trick.

Thanks for your help, Rolf.

cheers,

david

Hi all,

I have been a Pegasus user for many years and have decided to switch to Mercury for my mail server.  I use MercuryC and MercuryD as I relay over my ISP's mail server using SSL (to allow me to access it from where ever in the world I am).

My problem - Mercury sends my outgoing e-mails as blank e-mails if it has been running too long (although I don't know how long "too long" is).  A reboot fixes it.  Sometimes it also strips out the subject line.  It picks up e-mail fine.  I noticed today that the Mercury logo when the program was open had been replaced by a generic Windows program box - I have found this is never a good sign.

I have kept a syslog, and here is the output - as you can see, the body is there.  However, at the other end, there was no body.

I have (I hope) attached a transcript of the session.

Any help is gratefully received.

 Thanks,

David

There are as far as I can see two SMTP sessions in the log excerpts. One from Mon Feb 04 21:02:25 2008 that appears to be truncated, and one from Tue Feb 05 18:44:14 2008 that appears to be complete (at least from Mercury's point of view).

Do you have any anti-virus software running on the Mercury machine that might be interfering with file access or network/Internet communication? You should probably make sure to exclude the Mercury directories from any real-time AV scan.

Thanks Rolf. I'm running AVG, but it only does a scan at about 3 am (when I'm not sending). Mercury reboots after a 2 am maintenance. I've changed the Mercury maintenance/reboot time to 5 and will let you know if that does anything.

Thanks again for your help,

david

OK, so here a a few other things to check! (I know some are pretty obvious, but I list them anyhow...)

- Is there at all times enough free space on the disk with Mercury?

- Has the disk been checked for (heavy) fragmentation?

- Has there been an unexpectedly high load on the computer when the message truncation has occurred,  for instance due to lots of incoming spam?

- Could there be a hardware failure; perhaps a damaged sector on the hard drive?

- Are there any entries in the event logs in Windows that might be related to this?

Hi Rolf,

I looked at the event logs. I am on a wireless network, and I notice that the adapter seems to drop and resume connections, but this doesn't appear to have affected things - I have sent after such an event and the message has gotten through.

As for the rest, this is a new laptop - the disk is about 80% free, shows no need to defragment. I generally receive a low volume of e-mails - about 250-300/day. About half of that is spam, and most of it comes in overnight - I'll keep an eye on that. I'll also run scandisk to see if it turns up any bad sectors and repost the results of that.

Thanks again for your help,

david

Hi rolf,

I ran chkdsk and it did not report any bad sectors, cross-linked files, etc.. However, tonight when I went to send e-mail it once again arrived blank. I looked at Mercury and it **appears** to be okay (showing its proper logo/icon etc.) and it picks up mail fine as far as I can tell.

I can reboot it before I send e-mail, but that seems pretty pointless.

Is there any way I can get Pegasus to send directly on its own? This is what I used to do with my old mail server.

Thanks,

david

Are you sure that real-time protection is switched off in AVG? This is still the most likely reason that Mercury at times doesn't get access to its work files.

But anyhow, you can of course send messages directly to your Internet provider's mail server with SMTP from Pegasus, and only use Mercury for incoming mail.

Sorry Rolf, I misunderstood you. I can't exclude the directory from a scan (I'm running AVG Free), but I didn't realize you meant to turn off realtime protection. I've done that now, so we'll see what happens.

Thanks for the clarification!

Hi Rolf,

Still no dice.

To get Pegasus to send directly to my ISP's mail server, I just disable MercuryC and make sure I have a valid SMTP definition set up in Mecury - is that correct?

Thanks,

David

Just enter the address of your ISP's mail server as SMTP server in Pegasus. You should probably not disable MercuryC as Mercury may still need to send postmaster notifications to external addresses.
