Mail not being delivered - Held in pending status

[quote user="TonyRad"]It looks like after I closed out the problem accounts a bulk of the problems stopped. I'm still very new to the mercury servers and pmail and the guy who administered them previously is no longer around to help. The past couple weeks I have had a recurring problem with one of the servers, every morning I get about 50 to 200 or so emails that are unable to send and are stuck in the "pending" status. My mercury setup has 2 servers which pull email and sync with different novell servers, the one server has the problem every morning, the other never has it.

What I've been doing to fix this is rebooting the server and restarting the mercury SMTP service.  Then slowly the emails start sending out correctly. As much as I love this daily task, it would be much more benificial to prevent it from happening in the first place. I don't know what information you would like to help understand what is going on, so I'll just mention a few things here now and if you let me know what else would help I'll post that later as well.

Basic Problem:
-Every morning mail is stuck in the "pending" status
-In the system messages I typically get an error message saying something along the lines of "Core: File creation error delivering to 'server/username'."
-After checking that user in they have a mailbox and it is not full
-The user always changes and other emails will go through to it
-In my c:\program files\mercury\smtp\ directory I find the "pending" emails with the .QDF and .QCF extensions. I also find many files with the .QIF extension.
-While there are messages "pending" there are still others going through without a problem.
-These are usually all internal emails as well

I doubt that is enough information for you, but I don't know what else to put..  Please help if you can...

Thanks!

Are you running a evening backup program?  A backup may cause this sort of problem but generally if you just lock a file during the backup it will not really affect the delivery.  The other problem may be the user you are using to deliver the mail not having sufficient rights to the directory or tree.  Are yuo running as a Supervisor or Admin user?

Not that I know of, but as I mentioned I'm new to our mercury server. I noticed that the users getting the error didn't have permissions to any mailboxes but they were set to receive mail, those users not longer get mail so I closed their accounts yesterday. This morning I didn't have any problems with mail stuck in pending.  Should 3 or 4 emails stuck in pending for 4 or 5 users cause a backup of 50 or so emails though?

I am running it as supervisor.

Mercury Core is single-threading for the delivery but these deferred messages are just placed back in the queue to be tried again later.  I suspect that the delivery was not so much blocked but really slowed down due to these failures.  Trying to deliver when there are no permissions causes a lot of retrying.
