Problem with address book

I resolved this yesterday by using a backup copy of the files and inspecting them, vis-a-vis the presumably damaged copies of the corresponding files, with a file comparison tool. I could then manually make the changes hilighted in the change tool. Why would these files become corrupt? I'm so glad I maintain regular multi-version backups!

I suffered a crash when I was trying to save a draft email. Now Pegasus Mail [Version 4.41 (Win32), Jul 16 2006; on Win XP Professional) shows the title of my main address book to be "Unknown" and I can't select that address book. Yes, thankfully, I do have a recent backup of PMAIL key files. Should I look for the main address book and replace it and/or do anything else? Thanks.   --Dilip

The addressbook name is in the PMR file.  You might have lot this file in the crash and only have the associated PM! index file.  I would reload the *.PMR/PM! files from backup.

If you have more than one addressbook I'd first look around the HOME mail directory for the PMR and PM! file pairs.  FWIW, if I view a PMR file with Notepad the first thing I see is the addressbook name.

Thanks. I do have multiple address books but identified one, ADDR3BA3.PMR (and ADDR3BA3.PM!), that is the main one in question. It exists in my Mail folder as well - but given that I can't open it from within Pegasus Mail, it clearly needs repair or replacement. Before I throw away a few days of changes (BTW, the PM! file is dated 3/13/08 while the PMR one is 3/1/08), is there anything that I can do to "fix" these two files? Would a reboot help? Thanks!

I do not think a reboot can help but it can't hurt.  You can try extracting the addresses from the PMR file using the old PMIMPORT.exe from the MSDOS version.  This is a pretty simple process and you can re-import the resulting file using the Addressbook menu.  You can send me an email off line and I'll send you the pmimport.exe in a ZIP file.
