Question Mercury SMTP authentication failure for mailing application

Thanks everyone. You have all been very helpful. It appears that the Trendnet app has a serious security flaw. It seems to be using the local host's administrative password in its authorization.

It look's like I'll have to write my own app.

I have Mercury 4.5 installed on my computer and I have protocols S, P and E active. My host name is Tyan. I have a local domain called Tyan.me and a user mark. I am able to send myself an email successfully with username mark, password xyz, Incoming mail server 192.168.1.16 and outgoing server 192.168.1.16. I am also able to receive this mail. So, Mercury appears to be installed and configured properly – at least for this simple task. The Mercury log file shows the following for the SMTP transaction:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Connection from 192.168.1.16, Thu Mar 20 11:08:02 2008

EHLO TYAN

MAIL FROM: <mark@Tyan.me>

RCPT TO: <mark@Tyan.me>

DATA - 79 lines, 1941 bytes.

QUIT

2 sec. elapsed, connection closed Thu Mar 20 11:08:04 2008

I have an application installed on this box which emails a message to a specified address when a remote device senses motion. I know this application is setup and working because when configured to mail to my regular internet email address using my ISP’s incoming and outgoing, it works. But the process is too slow for my needs so I configured it to use the exact settings that worked for my email test above. (I have no access to view or modify the application’s source code.)

When I run the application it clearly is sending to my Mercury SMTP server but there is an error. The Mercury log shows this:

Connection from 192.168.1.16, Thu Mar 20 12:05:01 2008

EHLO localhost

auth login

QUIT

1 sec. elapsed, connection closed Mar 20 12:05:02 2008

The error in the session log is

501 Authentication failed - bad user or password.

I don’t know what this “localhost’ is about or where it’s coming from because my application is clearly set to the exact user, password, servers, etc. that my successful email test used.

How can I configure my Mercury server to accept mail from this application?

Anyone who can help me would surely be considered a scholar and a friend.

How about turning on session logging in MercuryS and then try sending again. You can post the results of this session log and it will provide a lot most information. That said, it looks like the application is providing a username and password via login that is not in the MercuryS authorization file.

Have you tried allowing relaying without AUTH for 192.168.1.16? (mercuryS config)

Can your app be configured not to attempt authentication?

<p>Have you tried allowing relaying without AUTH for 192.168.1.16? (mercuryS config)</p><p>Can your app be configured not to attempt authentication?&nbsp;</p>

Thanks for your reply. I am a beginner at this and I am not sure I know how to turn off AUTH in the Mercury S config. Is that done with checking Disable VRFY on the general tab? If so I have tried it.

The application is Trendnet's IPView program for their IP Camera. But Trendnet's code doesn't queue or tread the mail so, when any motion occurs the app ties up while the mail goes out. So, the server has to be fast. The app is a pretty dumbed down. You set the mail server, from and to, and give user names and passwords...that's it. The Trendnet techs are committed to saying "no-can-do" to all the questions I ask. It has a good motion detect algorythm though.

SSL is enabled, nothing's checked in compliance, no entries in spam control, connection control contains ips-allow for all network ips and 127.0.0.1, none of the relaying controls are checked, and all the check boxes on general are checked.

I just can't figure out why this app's email is coming from localhost nor can I understand why my SMTP won't take it... while the ISP's will.

A logfile listing is below. Again thanks guys.

You might want to change your password now!

AUTH LOGIN is a simple base64 encode of the data and decoding it gives the real data!

If xyz is really the password you are expecting as in your OP then that is not what the app is supplying .

The server is complaining that this is a bad user/pass combo.

Make sure the pair that you replace these with [:)] is in the SMTP AUTH password file (Config->MercS->Connection Control->AUTH_Pw file with full path i.e C:\Mercury\auth.pwd)

Thanks, I changed passwords.

My pwd is not really xyz (that's an edit). Can you figure out what the app is supplying and what Mercury is expecting from the logfile? If so, I can probably get the two to agree somehow.

It looks like I need to designate an auth password file. Do I construct this myself or is it a file somewhere in Windows or would it be in my app's program directory?

Create the AUTH password file yourself, then add a line corresponding to the username and password your application is using. That should guarantee that the mail is accepted for delivery. (Not sure why your app insists on using AUTH though.) The username and password are already known to you, since you apparently input them. (If not, dump the BASE64-decoded strings from the AUTH exchange and you'll find out.)

Cheers,

Sabahattin
