Using Mercury as smtp relay for moodle server

[quote user="gideon220"]When  I test this with an email client what would be my server name?  Or how do I find out the server name that needs to be in my client?  Is it just going to be smtp.server.domain.org?  Or should i use my internet IP address?  Selecting the option in core/general did work, but does that mean that anyone can send through this server?

Depends on the system.  If your email client is running  on the same system as Mercury/32 you can use "Localhost" or "127.0.0.1" as the server host name.  If you're running on a different system on your local lan then you can use the internal IP address of the Mercury/32 system.  If you are running from offsite then you need to use the hostname of the router or system connected to the internet.

If your server is actually connected to the internet then yes people can connect to port 25 to use your MercuryS host to send mail.  You have to turn off relaying in the MercuryS setup.

I'm trying to get mercury to work for my moodle site.  The only problem is it seems to only send mail if the address is from postmaster@  I need it to be able to send from any addresses that the users uses when they sign up on the site.  This is just a test server but this is one of the functions that will clarify if we're going to consider a production one.  Thanks for any help I really appreciate it.  I keep getting "user administrator@xxxx.org not known at this site."

Does checking 'Suppress validation of from field' in Configuration/Core/General make any difference?

The server is telling you is cannot deliver to the user administrator.  I think we need more information on how you are actually sending the mail.  The moodle system should be using SMTP to send to MercuryS SMTP server.  The SMTP server passes this information to the core module and if the domain matches a local user tries to deliver to that user.  This error message says that local user does not exist.  The local users are shown in Configuration | Manage local users.

The best way to test sending first of all is via a email client sending mail via SMTP.  Once you can send the mail  via the email client then you can configure yuor moodle system to send the mail.
