The MX record was wrong and is now fixed. My e-mail server is working, I can send and receive, even using a DHCP address. Thanks to you guys that responded. The help was greatly appreciated!

I am trying to get my own server set up and running. I can send email from the server, but cannot receive. I will try to give the details below:

1. I have my own domain name: kfpmail.com. MX record is mail.kfpmail.com
   
2. I have a DHCP ip address from my isp
3. I want my own server, not wanting to colllect email from the isp mail server
4. What modules do I need to be running? It's a cable connection. Again, I want to totally bypass my isp's mail system.
5. I am behind a firewall/router. Local IP range is 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.100. The server is on 192.168.0.2. I have port forwarding on for ports, 25, 110 and 587
6. I can send email from my smtp server to my email address at my ISP, but not receive any mail back ( I am testing by replying to my own sent email)
7. I am using DynDNS.
   

I am sure I am missing something along the way. Any help is appreciated, as I said, I am lost.......if you tell me to try something, I will!!

I will provide any needed info as quickly as possible to anyone that tries to help.

I have finally figured out part of the problem. It seems that when I send mail to kfpmail.com, I cannot receive it, but if I use kfpmail.getmyip.com (DynDNS) I can receive the mail. Great, almost............

I want to use the address xxxxxx@kfpmail.com, not xxxxxx@kfpmail.getmyip.com, so how can I correct this situation using a DHCP assigned address?

 
Would setting up an alias work?

You don't have any mx set up currently, so mail servers will use the a record.  I would point the mx to kfpmail.getmyip.com, and then you should be able to use your domain.

I have my mail.kfpmail.com in the mx record. How would I setup or where would I add the mx record for kfpmail.getmyip.com?

It doesn't look right to me - I've checked twice using different servers. 

kfpmail.com has an a record but no mx.  (mail.kfpmail.com has an mx record which it probably doesn't need unless you want to send mail to name@mail.kfpmail.com)

Using whatever method you registrar gives you, you need to alter the active-dns name servers so that there is an mx record for your main domain (kfpmail.com) that holds the name that points to your ip address (kfpmail.getmyip.com).  That's currently 97.80.55.40, and there's a mail server there responding on port 25 which I take to be yours.

When done, the record will look something like this:

kfpmail.com.     3600     IN      MX     10  kfpmail.getmyip.com.

If it's working properly, you should then start to receive mail to kfpmail.com at your server.

OK, I've made a change to the MX record, but have been unable to view the change online. Can you tell me what tool/commands/server you checked with?

I know I'm close to where I want to be, but unsure yet if I'm there. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for that link! According to the link, I still do not have a MX record, so I have emailed Active Domain to see what's going on. I hate to tell you how many hours, weeks and days I've been working on this. I never dreamed getting a domain set up with a DHCP address would be this many problems.

Why do yuo suppose many of us pay extra to work with a real ISP that provides fixed IP address and real DNS services.  ;-)

My ISP refuses to provide static address unless it's a business account and they want about twice as much per month for those accounts. I am retired, so I need to watch the pennies, let's see, ISP or food..........food wins everytime!! Unfortunately, they're the only game in town too. If I can get this MX record straightened out, I think I'll be there.
