IMAP and deleting messages

I've read this post as I'm having the same problem with IMAP with my

Gmail account.  I don't have IMAP setup with any other account so I

can't say if it is a Gmail problem or not, but from the above posts it

seems that it may not be limited to Gmail.

In GMail enable Setting | Labs | Advanced  IMAP controls.  Then in the IMAP4 settings try selecting "Do not automatically expunge messages" and see if this helps.  IIRC, it's the moving to the trash folder and expunging the original message that is causing the problem.  FWIW, this is the only IMAP4 server I have with this particular problem with deleting with an immediate purge. maybe that's why GMail added these "advanced" options.

Hi!

I'm having some troubles using IMAP with Pmail 4.41. I have the same issues with different email providers (both Gmail and web.de), so I suspect it is not related to the provider, but rather to my IMAP settings or Pmail's IMAP functionality.

Whenever I try and delete a message from an IMAP folder in Pegasus, I get the following error: "Profile 'Gmail': The IMAP server that manages this mailbox or folder has reported an error during the operation you have attempted to perform. The operation cannot be completed."

This is quite exasperating, as it also means I can't move emails from one folder to the next (both to local folders, and other folders on the IMAP account). Interestingly, I am able to copy emails, just not move them - when moving, it copies the emails, but is then unable to delete the original.

Any ideas?

thnx,

Rolf

My only guess is there is some sort of rights problem since I'm using WinPMail with GMail, Freemail and my ISP with out any problems using move at all.

According to some of the random IMAP postings on the internet, errors appear to be quite frequently associated with settings around the trash/deleted messages folder. What settings do you use for your gmail account?

The IMAP GMail 'issue' is well known for ALL clients.

Google will keep email even when you delete them by normal means.

If you move the emails to Google's Trash (should be an IMAP folder), then delete from that folder they will be gone.

If you delete / move to Pegasus trash/deleted folder (which is local to your machine) the emails will reappear in the Gmail (all mail folder).

The two step process (move to gmail trash then empty) seems to be the only way to completely delete mails. I have ended up moving to the gmail/trash via Pegasus then once a week logon to the web interface and select all / delete from the trash folder.

Google likes holding onto all emails since space is not really a consideration... 6 plus GB of storage and more coming online all the time. As they say... why delete when you can archive?

You're absolutely right about Gmail's approach to "deleting" emails.... however, I actually don't even make it that far. The moment I try to move emails (even to the trash folder!), I get an error message.

Would somebody maybe be able to write a short set of instructions for IMAP Gmail setup for Pmail with screenshots? I seem to have tried checking and unchecking all tickboxes at random, but  my deletion problem remains (as I mentioned, also with web.de, a more "normal" email provider than Gmail)

I'm having the same problem - continual disconnects whenever I try to delete or move a message. Sometimes I'll try to move it to a local folder multiple times, each time seemingly it fails, and then later when I check the local folder, there are multiple copies! Like Rendres said above, it would be great if someone would post a set of instructions or recommended setup for using Pegasus with GMail. Please? :)

Sincerely,
Nathan

Like I say, I've had no problems with deletes at all using WinPMail, OE, Outlook, Thunderbir, Slypheed or Eudora.  With WinPMail I set my TCP/IP time out to 300 seconds.  I'm using a direct SSL connection to GMail to port 993.  I have selected the option to "Delete them imediately, do not retain a safety copy"  When I hit delete, I mean to delete the message.  ;-)

Thank you for your response, Thomas. I'm going to post my settings and perhaps you can give some insight:

CONNECTION:
IMAP Server address: imap.gmail.com
Server port: 993
Timeout: 30 seconds
Login name: <FullEmailAddress>
Password: #########
Mailbox reference: <blank>

SETTINGS:
This server supports folders within folders: CHECKED
Always connect to this profile when Pegasus Mail starts up: CHECKED
Make this definition's INBOX folder the default new mail folder: UNCHECKED
Periodically update the INBOX view every _60_ seconds CHECKED
When deleting messages from folders in this mailbox...
Move them to an IMAP folder called _INBOX.Trash_
IMAP cache management (BOTH UNCHECKED)

PERFORMANCE
Mailbox is accessed exclusively by this copy of Pegasus Mail UNCHECKED
Keep a utility connection open when this definition is active CHECKED
everything else on this tab UNCHECKED

SECURITY
Use SSL/TLS
   Via direct SSL connect
everything else on this tab UNCHECKED

The only major difference I see is I have 30 seconds in the Timeout field instead of 300 seconds. I just reconnected with these settings and deleted a couple of messages. After the third deletion I got the following popup:

Error message in Pegasus trying to delete email from GMail via IMAP

I often get this same popup when opening a message to view the attachments. I don't know if Pegasus is trying to modify the message to change the "read" flag or what's going on, but I'm getting this message a lot. Is there some sort of logging I can turn on to see what's happening? I sure appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Sincerely,
Nathan

Forgive the double post, but this part of your message caught my eye. Do you have any problems with "deleted" messages not really being deleted in GMail? Many people find that the messages don't truly get deleted in Gmail, they just get moved out of the Inbox (or untagged by Gmail) but still being accessible in ALL MAIL via the GMail interface. I'm curious if that's the case or if Pegasus truly deletes the message. I'm trying to learn to move messages from the Gmail inbox to the Spam or Trash folder so that Gmail handles them that way in the Gmail interface (for when I have to access mail from a non-Pmail enabled computer! <G>). But the other problem I'm having (error message mentioned in this thread) seems to be thwarting me. Thanks again for your help.

Nathan

When deleting messages from folders in this mailbox...
Move them to an IMAP folder called _INBOX.Trash_
Try setting this to just "Trash"

PS. Just saw your last post. Deleted IMAP messages are just marked as deleted on the server and are not removed until a 'PURGE' command is sent. Gmail seems to have 'virtual folders' that may make this process slightly fuzzier, as I think the PURGE needs to be done on the REAL FOLDER that contains the deleted message.

Change the timeout to 300 seconds.   You might get by with less but GMail sometimes is a very busy server and you need to give it time to respond.

No I do not but then I've set this to delete the message, not move it to a deleted messages folder of any sort.

I changed that setting. I'm still getting the error, although it is "moving" the message (or tagging it in Gmail language). When I hit the "D" key to delete the message the number in the "Trash" folder increases by one, I get the error message popup and it appears that the message is still in the Inbox.. If I look at any other folder and click back on the Inbox folder, the message is no longer there.

I know there's an issue with the way Gmail works using tags instead of folders. I don't mind logging into the webmail interface from time to time to purge the Trash folder. In fact, that's not necessary because Gmail automatically purges the folder of 30 day old messages so I wouldn't have to log in. I just want to get rid of the annoying popup that tells me "the IMAP server that manages this mailbox... has reported an error...The operation cannot be completed", when in reality the operation was completed, or at least appears to have been completed if I click on another folder and then click back.

I've upped the timeout to 300 seconds as you suggest, but I'm still getting the popup error. It pops up just a few seconds after whatever it is I'm doing. It's almost like it's erroring on refreshing the folder or something like that.
Like I said, I delete messages immediately, I do not store them anywhere.
The problem is I want to make sure they get moved to the Trash folder in Gmail so that Gmail will truly purge them later. I access Gmail from Pegasus, from Chatteremail on my Palm Treo 700p and from the Gmail interface whenever I can't get access with my Palm. Ultimately I use Pegasus on my main computer to store my emails in the appropriate folders after I've dealt with them. But I need consistency across all three platforms and need to make sure Pegasus truly deletes or moves them to the Trash folder so Gmail can purge them. I don't need for Pegasus to think the message is deleted but for it to still show up in Chatteremail or in the Gmail web interface - I get easily confused! [:S]

I've read this post as I'm having the same problem with IMAP with my Gmail account.  I don't have IMAP setup with any other account so I can't say if it is a Gmail problem or not, but from the above posts it seems that it may not be limited to Gmail.

Did you find a solution to the error message that pops up when you do various operations?  I get the error message "the IMAP server that manages this mailbox x has reported an error. The operation can not be completed." when I try to delete e-mails or move them to a different folder.  As suggested above I have tried chaning the timeout to 300 sec, but that doesn't seem to make a difference as the error pops up almost immediately.  I also changed the delete option from "move to selected folder - Trash" to "delete immediately", but that made not difference either.

I'd appreciate hearing an update on this issue if you have one.
