Slow opening & closing of Pmail

There is no spec for the hierarch.pm, it's not required since yuor not supposed to be working with it.  ;-)

Hi,

My Pmail is very slow to close nowadays. The open windows

close instantly but the main window may take 30 seconds or more to

close. Opening up, if it somehow gets into the 'count the folders'

mode,  takes a several minutes, I can almost count that fast! (How can I avoid that folder counting

mode?)

I have almost 2000 folders some of which have

hundreds of email  in. Even if the average is perhaps only 20 this is a

lot of bytes. I assume this is the cause of the slow opening and

closing, and wonder if there is some way of improving this (short of

archiving messages out of Pmail) in some way.

It runs on a rather sluggishly performing Celeron 2800 and upgrading is not a current option.

I suspect that the hierarch.pm is causing this problem.  You might want to check it out to make sure that there are no bad lines in the file.  If nothing else, remove all of the lines that state "Name_Unavailable"  If you do not have a lot of trays (but I'm sure you do) you might just want to delete the file and have it rebuilt.

FWIW, you really should not have folders of the same name either even when in different trays.   This can be a major problem if you lose the hierarch.pm without a current backup.

Thomas, hi.

Thanks. I found 4 lines "Name_Unavailable" only. I'll wait to the next 'counting folders'  event and see if matters improve.

Bad lines, mmm, just how do you define them? I can see a pattern, or in fact patterns.  I'll earmark that as a small perl project for a rainy afternoon when I just don't want to do anything else. Is there a published specification or a fix-it utility? I seem to remember years ago that the answer to both was no.

I have had several bad hierach.pm folders over the years and that is not a good thing to happen.

 Regards
 Anne
