Pmail 4.41 & AVG 8.0

Jad,

have no solution for your specific problem, but as an alternative to AVG I would recommend AntiVir (also free) from www.avira.com.

and I have a question too: does AVG 8 still allow to install without "active" on-guard scanner? this would provide a means to have two free av-tools installed, one active and on-guard, the other one as on-demand when one wants to get sure.

After installing avg 8.0 (free) ( including setting avg up to scan) I can't receive any email in pmail 4.41 (shows that scanning is taking place).

Do pmail and  avg 8.0 play well together. If not, is avast a good alternative and does it work ok. I have used varios versions of avg & pmail for a long time. (I am running XP home)

Thanks

I use it but I do not have it sitting between WinPMail and the servers and i do not have it autoprotect turned on and scanning the mail directories.  I do use Clamwall on the Mercury/32 server catching the virus.

That said, in your case you need to modify the setting in the automated mail scanning so that you can connect to the server.

Thomas,

I've been using pmail since 1992. I know you have been helping people for a very long time. Thank you. (it's nice to see what you look like).

Getting to my problem, This is my home computer (I use pmail 4.41 w/o using mercury). avg had me do the following:

In pegasus:

server =127.0.0.1

Port =5100

Security = never

In avg:

Login= fixed host =pop.att.yahoo.com:995  (service provided is sbc/att)

Port=5100

Connection=ssl default.

When I try to retrieve email, the window in the lower right pops up indicating scanning--but no mail gets through.

If I can't get this resolved in the next day or 2 I will have to change anti virus programs.  Would avast be a good choice?

Thanks. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Not sure what to tell you.  Obviously your AVG setup is broken somehow.  Since you are using Pegasus Mail you really do not have to worry about getting a virus at all unless you open an attachment that contains the virus.  I'd turn off the AVG system and then use VirScan via the command line to scan the mail when read to solve the problem.

Jad,

I had no pb installing AVG8 and have it work with Pegasus 4.41 on 2 different comuters. Actually, I installed it over a previous AVG7.5 version and I use the paid version of AVG, but I reckon the way both the free and commercial versions work must be the same. At setup time, none of the AVG programs I installed asked me what type of Mail programs I used. On one of the computers, AVG actually caught 2 viruses recently in incoming mail. This freezed Pegasus but that's less of a trouble than letting the virus in.

 Perhaps you should just re-install AVG8.

 Don't give up on either AVG or Pegasus!
