I installed Pegasus Mail on this MS WinXp last night and am having the worst trouble receiving mail. According to the settings I have on my old Win98se OS, all my settings seem to be the same. I can send ok but am hving to go to my rcn server to receive mail. RCN does not support Pegasus so I could not get any help there. I tried sending myself email from my Yahoo account but it didnt come through. Anyone got any suggestions? Oh, keep em simple, I am not into all the gobbledygook.

Hope you do not consider this gobblygook.

Go to File | Network configuration | General and turn on "Create Internet session logs (advanced diagnostic use only)"

Checking this control tells Pegasus Mail to create special log files that show the entire exchange of information between it and the servers it connects to. Each session will be created in a file called TCPxxxx.WPM in your home mailbox directory (the "xxxx" is replaced by four digits). Creating session logs will slow down the performance of your system somewhat, and you should be aware that any username and password information exchanged between Pegasus Mail and the server will be shown in the log, *even* if you use SSL to secure the connection. Session logs are primarily useful if you need to debug a problem between Pegasus Mail and one of the servers it connects to - you should enable the option only on instructions from a system administrator or from Pegasus Mail technical support. [ Technical note: this control has the same effect as using a "-Z 32" commandline switch when you run Pegasus Mail ]

You can now try again to send/receive the mail and then look at the resulting TCP/IP debug file.  Review of this file will tell you exactly what is going on between WinPMail and the server.

I checked that box and sent myself an email from another accountm but how or where do I find the tcp/ip debug file?

Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info and note the HOME mail directory.  The file will be there.  You could have also searched for TCP*.WPM and fopund it.

Hi,

I have the same problem. After running Pegasus (4.41) fro some hours it suddenly starts using all of my cpu. I aleady set the affinity to one processor, this keeps my system faster. I made a log and noticed that all other times it collected email I had a log for each emailacoount. And the last time it got email from servers, there were some logs, and it stopped at an empty log, and didn't do the rest. A file with a size of 0 bytes.

When I close Pegasus after this, it does not really close. The user interface disappears, but at driverlevel (CTRL_ALT_DEL) I still se it running and using a lot of cpu. At 1 processor 50%. I actually have to kill the task to stop it. After this I can sometimes restart Pegasus, sometimes I have to reboot the whole PC. I am using spampal, checkedthat but cloising and opeing all seems ok, I see no problemsbn there.

When I kill the task, sometimes other programs get into trouble, one that often goes to 50% is Acrobat and/or its updater. I also see more problems when I have MSN running.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

I have the same problem. After running Pegasus (4.41) fro some hours it suddenly starts using all of my cpu. I already set the affinity to one processor, this keeps my system faster. I made a log and noticed that all other times it collected email I had a log for each emailacoount. And the last time it got email from servers, there were some logs, and it stopped at an empty log, and didn't do the rest. A file with a size of 0 bytes.

I actually have to kill the task to stop it. After this I can sometimes restart Pegasus, sometimes I have to reboot the whole PC. I am using spampal, checked that but closing and opening all seems ok, I see no problems there.

Any suggestions?

First thing that comes to mind is that you have winsock loading problems.  Try setting the winsock in Tools | Options | Advanced to "Always" and see if this helps.

I already did that. It doesn't help.

Is there a way to log other things in Pegasus?

The TCP/IP debug file mentioned above  tracks all the TCP/IP communications with the server but in order to track the winsock level stuff you need something that works at a much lower level and I cannot help you there.

Good morning,

I have a similar problem, however there are only select emails that will not be delivered to my Pegasus mailbox.

I spoke to my server administrator and they informed me that because these particular emails have Excel spreadsheet attachments with enabled Macros, the Mailscreener is rejecting the delivery of the emails. I found this to be a surprising answer since the same email with the same macro enabled excel files can be sent and delivered to other people within my company and their emails are handled by the same server, the only difference being that they use Microsoft Outlook and I am using Pegasus. As a test, I tried sending the suspect emails from my GMail account to my Microsoft Outlook mailbox, and the messages were again not delivered, so I don't believe it is a Pegasus related problem. I have viewed all the Network Configuration options, and there does not seem to be anything that would be instructing my server to single out emails with suspect attachments for non-delivery.

At this point in time my Server Administrator is not taking any further action in trying to make sure that my emails are delivered to me, so I am hoping someone on the forum may be able to offer me some advise. I am concerned that I have people within my company, as well as customers, who are sending me emails, and they are not aware that I am not receiving their emails.

Thanks in advance to all offered help. best regards. Tony

As the mails are being stopped at the server there is nothing you can do, apart from impressing on the Server Administrator the importance of getting all your mail delivered. (threatening him/her with a sharp pointy object may help) [:P]

Choice of mail client will have no effect.

You may get them through if they are zipped (although most AV's scan inside un-passworded zip files) or otherwise archived.

The mail from Outlook to Outlook is probably not going via SMTP but direct.  That's the normal way it works with an Exchange/Outlook setup.  In any case they are not going through the MailScreener.

As a test, I tried sending the suspect emails from my GMail account to my Microsoft Outlook mailbox, and the messages were again not delivered, so I don't believe it is a Pegasus related problem.

Agreed, they are block the mail from the outside.

I have viewed all the Network Configuration options, and there does not seem to be anything that would be instructing my server to single out emails with suspect attachments for non-delivery.

Many systems block attachments like this from the outside of their Exchange mail system coming in via SMTP but not from the inside where the mail is sent directly between mail clients.  Have you tried to zip up the attachments to see if they will come though?

At this point in time my Server Administrator is not taking any further action in trying to make sure that my emails are delivered to me, so I am hoping someone on the forum may be able to offer me some advise. I am concerned that I have people within my company, as well as customers, who are sending me emails, and they are not aware that I am not receiving their emails.

The people on the outside are probably being blocked as you are.  Customers do not like this and in many cases never bother to tell anyone the reason they looked to another company to provide the service.  FWIW, you were talking to the wrong people.  The people in IS  can't help, but maybe management does not even know what's happening.  Take it up with your management.

Thanks in advance to all offered help. best regards. Tony

Thanks very much for your replies Thomas and "d'sln". I received a response from our server provider, but unfortunately they have missed the significance that it is only my email address that is prevented from receiving certain excel spreadsheets, irrespective of whether I use Outlook or Pegasus.

I'm more disappointed with the response from our server provider, than the actual problem, so it might be time to look at an entirely new server provider. Thankfully, I'm the person that can put that ball in motion.

Thanks once again for your input. Happy New Year.

Tony
