I have used AVG (free) for many years and Pegasus even longer (on my home PCs).
Recently forced to upgrade to AVG 8 (free). I noticed in the past few days that I do not see the little AVG box pop up telling me it is scanning email while mail is being "brought down" after viewing in the PM "Selective Mail Download" window which I always use.
AVG is set to scan incoming mail and "display notification icon" is checked yes. I read other posts about AVG 8 but they talk about AVG asking for "settings" like ports. I don't recall AVG asking me anything, and I cannot find any place in AVG where I could enter this kind of info.
Possible explanations:
1) AVG 8 is so fast the box doesn't show (seems very unlikely with some larger attachments in emails)
2) AVG shows only Outlook for an email plugin. I do not use Outlook for email, but in order to sync calendars with my PPC I think Outlook has to be listed as the default email program. Could this be misleading AVG to sit around and wait for mail to come in thru Outlook and not check PM?
If 2) is the problem, what is the solution? I never had to "set" anything before. PM has never showed up in IE Internet Options to pick as default email client but the mail always got scanned. I can uncheck the default setting within Outlook but I don't think that will matter. Should I try it? I once tried changing email default settings in some deep dark Windows place to make PM the default, but it never "stuck" after reboot so I quit trying.
This situation is making me a little anxious. I'm a person who "never" get computer viruses, but I also "always" have AV software running and updated.
