Pegasus does not open

Hi There

Thought I should let you know before you had chance to respond that I solved the problem and also to log in case anyone else experiences the same.

I don't understand how but some file in the installation was causing the problem but then it's weird......

I tried uninstalling, rebooting and installing to a different directory "c:\pegasus7" - then delete cnm files etc in the stored directory with no change. I renamed the data directory (to c:\data\mail2) and copied an older data directory (a week old) and pegasus fired up no problem. That obviously got me to thinking the problem was related to some data (probably an email) from the past week.  So I reinstated the current data and played around.  No matter how much I played around everytime I loaded Pegasus I got the "program not responding" message.  I was about to resign myself to giving up on the last week of emails when I had an idea that couldn't possibly work....

I renamed the program installation file directory to "c:\pegasus7\programs2" and copied the installation directory from a cloned back up (which was as normal c:\pmail\programs).  It couldn't possible fix the problem because it was obvious the problem was data not program related.... but you guessed it - it did!

It doesn't make any sense to me but to relief of my fingers, eyes and wife it got me outta stuck.

I rely on someone else coming up with the reason it worked, I'm just grateful it did!!

Hi! I'm so happy to have found this forum! I love Pegasus but right now, I'm lost.

Since Windows closed unexpectedly earlier today, I cannot re-open Pegasus. When I try to open it, it says that my mailbox is locked. I say continue and it starts the process of opening Pegasus. But when it starts ''Opening new mail folder...'', it gets stuck there. I let it go up to a half-hour and nothing was happening. When I try to close the program from my tray, I get a message that Winpm-32.exe is not responding.  I tried to re-start my computer without any success. I have Pegasus v4.4 on Windows XP.

If my only option is to uninstall and re-install Pegasus mail, will I loose all my e-mails that are no longer in my server?

Thank you for your help.

Move all of the *.CNM files out of the new mail directory and try again.  It should now open normally.  You can then put the messages back one at a time until you find the problem message.

It's probaby going to be a really large message.  If you are using content control then I'd recommend that you set a limit on the message size so you are not scanning these large files with encoded attachments.

1.    Use  Tools | Spam and content controls | Content control...

2.    Select and edit the control definition

3.    Select the "Message tests" tab.

4.    Enter 8000 in "Check at most this many bytes in each message"

Thank you for answering so quickly!

I have a question about this new mail directory. Where do I find it? (Sorry if it's a stupid question!)

When I go on my C drive, I find a folder labeled PMAIL. In this folder, I have two more folders (Mail and Programs). In the mail folder, I have a Admin folder with some RmtFiles and a PMAIL.USR file. In the Programs folder, I have two more folders (Defaults and Resources) but none contain anything with *.CNM files.

When I can access my Pegasus again, I will definitely set a limit on the message size. I remember that just before Windows re-started by itself (I think because of an update), I was trying to send a file with a big attachment. Could that be the source of my problem?

Thanks again for your help!

a Admin folder with some RmtFiles and a PMAIL.USR file.

The CNM files will be in the Admin folder since that is your new and home mail directory.

It worked!!! Thank you!

When I changed the view mode to list I found the CNM files. I also found the culprit and like you said, it was a big one.

 I really appreciate your help.

Hi There

I have a similar problem too.

I set up my data directory under c:\data\mail a long time ago (so it made backing up easy)

Just had the same "not responding" problem so I uninstalled and re-installed.  Pegasus 4.52 opened fine and wanted me to enter all the relevant setup and connection info.

Instead I went into PMAIL.CFG and altered to my data directory as I had done previously.

Now when I open Pegasus I get the "not responding" message.

I tried removing all the cnm files though in the data directory but it made no difference.

Any suggestions you have would be very much appreciated.

Did you do this change using pconfig.exe?
