If you disable any of the features of AVG, such as email scanning or link checking, the pretty little
four part coloured square turn all red. This is what you also see if something goes wrong with AVG.
But.... go into menu item Tools/Advanced Settings and you will be presented with a list of functions
one of which is "Ignore Faulty Conditions". Select this item, and check the boxes for email and
link checking, and hey presto! the multi-coloured box returns in Systray to its proper state.
