problems sending email

Thanks, Paul. I did so, using the pop.earthlink.net definition that does actually get incoming mail. (Although, while I tested it, I stopped as soon as I saw it was working, since I don't want to lose any messages until I can be sure things are working both ways.) Anyway, now <sigh> I'm back to that bloody error message 15:  <i>Peer connect failure (the host has refused the connection).</i></sigh>

I'm going to try phoning Earthlink, and see if I can get someone who actually knows something about their own product and why it's been so recalcitrant on this new machine. I have to say, all of you at Pegasus are at least trying, and I really appreciate that.

 The only two other things I haven't tried yet are on that "Setting for sending mail," on the General tab. One says "Use an alternate e-mail address for the SMPT envelope," with a blank beneath it for said address. The other is "Use this domain name in the HELO/EHLO server greeting," again with a blank for the name. As far as domains go, the only one I can think of that applies in this case is earthlink.net itselft.

As I said, I'll try getting through to their phone support and I'll check back here later.

Background: my computer crashed last week. I was running

Win98; it was older hardware. I've been given a "new" hand-me-down

Dell computer, this one somewhat newer. It runs XP.

Most of my old data is okay, although I'm afraid I may have lost a lot

of saved email. But I tried re-installing Pegasus. Only thing was, I

couldn't remember the old POP and STMP addresses and ports. So I got

hold of an Earthlink online rep and asked. He gave me the right POP,

but the wrong port number, so nothing happened. Well, the one I'd used

before was 110, so I thought maybe he'd typoed when he said "10" and I

reset to 110. Presto! I can get mail now.

BUT.

The change in port number was much bigger, and I don't recall what my

original port number was. So, can anyone help? This is dialup (high

speed is not available in this area) and as I said, it's via

earthlink.net. The SMTP he gave me was smptauth.earthlink.net and the port number was 587. When I try to send email, I get the following error message: "15: Peer connect failure (the host has refused the

connection)." 

I'm in Arizona, almost the opposite end of the

globe from you Kiwis :), so I'm hoping someone can help me soon. I am

going crazy here; too much of my daily business and life are conducted

via email. Many thanks!!!

Was that typo in your post, or his instructions? (should be smtpauth.earthlink.net)

Just tried, and it accepts connections fine on port 587.

Looks like the host is smtpauth.earthlink.net and they are asking for both STARTTLS and ESMTP authorization.  Edit the SMTP setup and select both and it will probably work.

Thanks, but I'm still lost! How do I do this? My version of Pegasus (4.41) doesn't have anything about those terms in the setup window for Internet Mail Options and Sending setup. Maybe I need to upgrade or something, but it's very frustrating, as I had been able to send email right up until the crash-and-burn on July 25.

BTW, that reversal of the T and P was my typo in writing the message; the guy at Earthlink gave me the correct info and I double-checked the spelling when I entered it, so it was right.

I do appreciate the help. I am just so frustrated that I'm ready to start breaking things! This is the longest I've been without email in over a decade, and I do so much of it that I feel crippled.

David Harris has implemented ESMTP AUTH CRAM-MD5 for WinPMail, Mercury and Mercury/32.  They do a SMTP authentication in accordance with RFCs 2554 and 2195.  Mercury and Mercury/32 also do the LOGIN and the strange MS AUTH=LOGIN.

Go to File | Network configuration | (Sending) SMTP, edit the SMTP setup, select the "Security" tab and select one of the 3 options for doing SMTP Authorization.

The "via STARTTLS" is also on this same menu and probably should be checked as well.

I think it was that final "via STARTTLS" that did it, but it WORKED!!!  I can now send email! Now, as soon as I figure out how to restore my entire file structure and rules to redirect all the incoming mail, I'm back in business!

I do have one remaining problem, but I'm going to catch up first. Meanwhile, bless you ***ALL*** again, henceforth and forevermore! Gads, if I wasn't beyond childbearing, I'd offer to name my next offspring for you. I am grateful!!!

Damn. (Am I allowed to say that?) I thought it had gone through, but I got a bounce message a few moments later with a different error message, 550. Here's what it said:

    Delivery has failed on the enclosed message for the following
    reasons reported either by the mail delivery system on the mail
    relay host or by the local TCP/IP transport module:

       550 Authentication required. Help at http://www.earthlink.net/go/emailsettings 

So I went to their bloody site and Pegasus is not listed. Eudora is, and Vista, and several flavors of Outlook and Netscape, but not Pegasus. I happen to LIKE Pegasus, assuming I can get it going again. I do not want to go back to Eudora, and I'll be dipped in luke-warm gunk before I go with Outlook or Netscape.

 I think we're making progress here, and I have hope. But it does get frustrating, especially when the alleged "help" site offers nothing for my selected software!

 I'll still kiss your feet, but until we resolve this, I'll hold off on the naming of mythical offspring.

Go to the 'Setting for sending mail' that Thomas described, and on the General tab change the 'port' from 25 to 587, and on the Security tab, check the bottom checkbox and select your POP (receiving mail) definition.
