Cannot mail out....

That looks like the MercuryE (end-to-end SMTP) console output, though. Your Internet provider is most likely blocking outgoing traffic on port 25. So unless you can convince them that you should be allowed to use port 25 you will need to switch to MercuryC and relay the mail through your Internet provider's mail server.

The most obvious explanation would be that your Internet provider blocks outgoing traffic on port 25 (to stop spam), which is getting quite common unless you have a business account. Unfortunately that would block sending to your friend's Mercury server as well, unless your friend has the same ISP and the ISP allows port 25 connections in their own net.

Another explanation could be that these mail hosts require you to have a reverse DNS entry for your IP address.

One way to find out would be to make a Telnet connection to for instance one of the aim.com IPs on port 25 (open a command prompt and enter: telnet 205.188.109.56 25), and see what reply you get.

If port 25 is blocked you could try asking your ISP to open it for you (alternatively create a reverse DNS entry if that is the problem), or you could use MercuryC instead of MercuryE for SMTP deliveries. In that case outgoing mail will be relayed through your ISPs SMTP server instead.

Reverse DNS, or PTR record, is an entry in a name server that returns a host name from an IP number. If there isn't one for your IP number you will have to ask your Internet provider to create one.

If you use ADSL without fixed IP-addresses, which spamhaus is noting, you have to use MercuryC and relay emails via a smart host of your ISP.

Do you use the MercuryE or MercuryC module for deliveries? What does the log for that module say when you try sending a message?

If the problem is that your ISP is blocking port 25 for any accounts other than it's own, you might wish to try a SMTP relaying service, which use ports other than 25.  There are various ones that you can find by Googling "SMTP relay".  Many of these are commercial and you have to pay for service.  I am using an "almost free" relay, through my local community Freenet operation.  It works well and my originating address can be anything as long as I use my username and password for authenitification.
