Comcast.net caused a problem for sending mail

BTW, at least for Comcast in the Eastern seabord of the U.S. there is no need to change the SMTP port from its value of 25 or to check the box you check in the Security tab. Keep it simple.

I keep getting an error message"15: Peer connect failure (the host has refused the connection).

I went to my Pegasus Mail an clicked on Tools; internet options; SMTP; edit; on the general tab it asks me to "Enter name for this definition" I entered "mail.comcast.net"; then is asks me for the "Server Host Name" and I entered "mail.comcast.net ------ I'm not sure about the "Definition" name ----- did I do it right?

I also changed the TCP/IP port from 25 to 587; clicked on the Security tab and checked the last box (Login to the SMTP server using a POP3 username/password and selected my email address).

I still get error message 15, so I think my definition on the general tab must be wrong.

Please help!

Thanks,

Jim@illinoisjobs.com

Thanks Thomas for your help. I did check the via STARTTLS option, but still get an error message saying "

550 5.1.0 Authentication required"

Here's how I set up my SMTP:

1. Definition name = smtp,comcast.net

2. Gen. settings for sending mail via SMTP = smtp.comcast.net

3. Server TCP/IP port = 587 Timeout = 90

4. I checked via STARTTLS

5. I checked last box "Login to SMTP server using a POP3 username/password - (I selected my email address - jim@illinoisjobs.com)

Thanks again for your help.

How about providing a session log showing this process. Munge you password and AUTH string before sending the session log.

I talked to comcast.net technical support (about 5 different support people) and they are not able or willing to help me with this problem since they know zilch about Pegasus - they ended up by telling me I could use their comcast email package or Outlook/Outlook Express since they do not have the resources to trouble shoot problems with Pegasus Mail. This is upsetting to me as I have been using Pegasus Mail for about the last fifteen years. I did try your suggestion of using the second option for SMTP authentication and still get the error saying Authentication Rejected.

The last person I talked to didn't seem to know what CRAM-MD5 was.

Thanks for your efforts,

Jim

Glad I am not the only one....however; it's happening with my wife's Outlook Express as well.

Randomly and occasionally I will get something like SanFransico.comcast refused rather than just mail.comcast

Comcast said it's my issue, I am exploring if it's antivirus related.

What are you running for that? I was running AVG and now Antivir PE

For what it's worth, Rogers Canada employs a check on the outgoing mail to determine if it contains a Rogers return address or another user specified return address from a different server. If you don't have a Roger's return address the mail is refused and you will receive an error. There is a way to allow other return addresses however. You have to adjust your Rogers email account settings to accommodate the other return address. You do this by accessing your account online, locating the email settings page and entering the additional email address in the appropriate data entry window.

Looking at your email settings it appears that you send mail via comcast.net, and receive via illinoisjobs.com. Am I interpreting this correctly?? If so, that might be the cause of the problem. If Comcast is checking the outgoing mail for a Comcast return address and your using another server to receive your email, it won't matter what email program your using as you will receive the same error.

Your definition is incorrect.

Where it says "Enter name for this definition" enter: SMTP, <Default>

Where it says "Server host name" enter: smtp.comcast.net

Your definition is incorrect.

Where it says "Enter name for this definition" enter: SMTP, <Default>

Where it says "Server host name" enter: smtp.comcast.net
