Mercury 4.62 crashing during startup -> related to Graywall

It would be interesting to hear if someone is running GrayWall 1.1.0 on Win98SE without having these problems. There are some differences in the Windows API between the Win95 and WinNT generation that can cause unexpected errors.

[posting this to the Mercury list on BAMA and on the forum because I don't know who reads where]

First, I was upgrading from Mercury 4.52 to 4.62 and Spamhalter as it was included with both installers. Graywall was updated in between to 1.0.1 and Mercury 4.52 was running fine with Spamhalter and Graywall 1.0.1

Then.. and I have no idea what happened.. but after installing 4.62 it crashed (sort of) on every startup. "Mercury caused a page fault... blabla". I had updated both Spamhalter and Graywall as well (leaving the ini files as they were) with the versions included in the Mercury 4.62 installer package.

After some testing I found that Graywall was causing this crashes. I first tried uninstalling Graywall (add/remove programs) but it cleared the complete DAEMON.INI file during uninstall disabling Spamhalter as well that way. I couldn't get Spamhalter to run again without deleting the whole Mercury dir and placing back a complete Merc dir backup and then do the update to 4.62 again.

This time I selected exactly the same (again with both daemons) and removed the graywall lines in the DAEMON.INI file myself and now Mercury started with no problems at all. I would still like to use Graywall and I could install again leaving the old Graywall 1.0.1 in place instead of trying the 1.1.0 version included in the package of course but I would like to use this newer version.

Anyhow, after this trial and error upgrade it seems that this crashing is related to the newer Graywall somehow but I can't figure out what's going wrong. Both daemons used to run just fine in the old setup. Anybody with similar experiences or even better a solution?

TIA,

Joop Reijenga.

I've been using the new GrayWall version since it was released (on a low resource computer) without any problems, so there seems to be something special in your environment that causes the crash. What OS version is it? Do you have any other applications running? Just to be sure it might be good to verify that the RAM in the computer is error free.

This is a low resource computer as well :) Mercury is running for years on this old Win98SE Pentium 1 now. Graywall and Smaphalter (first Spamwall) are both in use since Lucas provided them. Never had any probs with them at all.

There is nothing else running  on this machine, it is only running for mercury (family use so no heavy loads as well) and nothing else is running on it. If it would be RAM related then the older version wouldn't run on it as well I think? The Graywall version only differs from 1.0.1 to the newer 1.1.0 I will check it out tomorrow though just in case, think I still have some of these old SIMs around somewhere :)

Regards,

Joop.
