Also true on Canon iP4300. No matter what is set, printer resets itself (only when printing a message in Pegasus mail 4.63) to the upper paper feed.

Hi all,

The title of the post may be a little missleading as to how simple to solve this problem is, so apologies for that.

We are using  v4.41 of the Pegasus client, one of our users (although I'm told that others are experiencing the same thing) is having an issue whereby whenever he prints an email even though he is specifying to use the default plain paper tray the email is printing to the tray containing letter head.

This is not happening with any other application, only Pegasus.

I have checked the default settings on the network printer, and also on the users' printing preferences and all seems fine as far as I can tell.

Having never even heard of Pegasus until July when I joined the company I really am stumped.

Any suggestions greatly received.

Is the windows default printer for this user setup to use the letterhead tray?  If so then Pegasus Mail will also use that tray no matter how you change it in Pegasus mail.

The user's default tray is indeed set to the plain paper tray and NOT the letterhead.

 Strange.  Start a print in Pegasus Mail and check to see what the settings are in Pegasus Mail.  FWIW, the Pegasus Mail printer settings are in the pmail.ini file and if nothing else you can delete the entries in the file when the program is not running to start all over.  Just the entries, not the entire line.

Ah, that is interesting.

I have looked at the pmail.ini file as suggested, sitting in those entries was something about a brother usb printer, I can only assume that is the user's home printer as we use Kyocera or HP printers in the office, so how those entries got in there I do not know, but have cleared them and saved the file.

Am just waiting for the user to confirm this has worked, as I made the changes remotely.

This is really strange, are you sure that the windows default printer on their system is set to print using the correct tray?  When they print are they showing that Pegasus Mail is using the default printer?

I have not seen any mention of whether it is plain text or html printing that you are attempting. If it is html printing, you can ensure that Beathtml is set to give you a print setup dialog by adding the following line to Bearhtml.ini :

  printsetup=yes

Then key in Shift + Ctrl + P to perform the printing. The Print Propertys dialog usually provides paper selection processing

It happens with all emails, plain text or html.

The windows default is definately set to print to the correct tray, have tested in notepad.

To be honest, I have spoken to the user, although an irritation it can be worked with.  Is just one of those things that I'd like to get to the bottom of.

I was considering an uninstall and reinstall of Pegasus as a last resort.

Not sure if that will help but you could rename/move/delete the users pmail.ini & state.pmj when WinPMail is not running and he will start as a new user.  This will cause him to lose his POP3/SMTP configuration and identities (if used) but other than that all folders and files will not be affected.   I still think though this is an OS problem of some sort.  printer driver? 

I was really happy to find this post even though there was really no resolution. I have the same exact problem with a network printer in my home.

I have a Canon MFC8100 series color laser on my network. I have been experiencing intermittent issues and finally narrowed it down to the fact that printing from an e-mail in Pegasus causes an error. The error message is about the wrong size paper in the cassette even though it is correct. It may also indicate that the multi-purpose tray is empty. I can put paper into the tray or copy the text from the e-mail and move it to Notepad or some other empty doc - either way will result in a printout. However, I cannot print from e-mail without getting the error. I can print directly to an HP Inkjet from Pegasus, but not to the laser. I do have the latest drivers loaded.

I would be willing to experiment with some solutions if any are offered with precise instructions. There are work-arounds, but it's a little bit of a hassle. My impression is that it's trying to print from the tray even though every default setting I can find or even set before printing says to print from the cassette. Thank you for any information on this.

Doublecheck the driver. Seems some (Oce' here) will default to the first paper tray, not following the 'plain paper' tray assignment. Caused a few hours of grief.

Pegasus 4.41 Win32

Printer installed using Vista internal driver.

Printing from all other programs paper tray selection works correctly but from Pegasus whatever the printer setting,  using all methods on the printer or in software the the top tray is used.

Printing to a prn file then printing the prn file gives the same result.

Examination of the .prn file shows that a "4" is set about 100 characters in.

Printing from notepad and changing the paper tray results in this character changing and the correct tray being used.

Editing a .prn file from Pegasus that will not print to the correct tray by changing the digit to "3" enables the file to print to whatever the paper feed selection is set to on the printer.

This method is not a solution but may give an expert a little clue to the problem.

"4" is the code for automatic sheet feeder and it is always set by Pegasus. In the prn file it shows near this combination "4 <(q"

This is a major weakness in Pegasus, Possibly the only one. Its often caught me and the only solution I have found is to paste the email in to Notepad then print.

 It does not affect all printers though, so try using a different printer if one is available and convenient.

 I have tried all the preferences settings etc nothing seems to work on some printers.

It is now a dual boot machine, but with just one PMail installation, and a Canon Pixma IP4000 printer, either network (JetDirect) or local USB. Emails print correctly when running under Win98, but under WinXP it always wants to print from the hand feed tray, which we would like to keep for use with special paper only. Other programs that I have tried so far print correctly.

This works for HTML messages, and then only if viewing the fully formatted version. A simple text message prints via the standard pmail pop-up, and so to the wrong tray.

An unexpected "feature" of using Ctrl/Shift/P for printing HTML is that it cannot be cancelled. Closing the pop-up via "Cancel" or "X" also starts the print job.

I have seen this on several network printers. As Thomas has previously said, contacting the manufacturer of the printer driver will often result in a fix. We recently began using an Oce multi-function device. Although Pegasus Mail prints fine from the by-pass tray, certain other programs do not. Luckily, Oce have a good tech support crew and are looking into this. Just because other programs can print fine does not always mean the program that can't has a bug.
