IMAP Connecting and Offline Use

To access your emails in offline mode you need to convert your Exchange OST file into PST formats using an OST to PST Converter tool. https://filehippo.com/download_vmail-ost-to-pst-converter/

As directed by our University IT, I have recently switched from POP3 to MS Exchange. They do have an IMAP access protocol that I am using, and my primary use is via a laptop that I undock every night and take home. Although I can connect and access my e-mail, I cannot change to offline mode once I have connected. Whenever I try, I get a "bleep" and no change. Then when I do go offline by undocking, I constantly get conneciton errors until I close and restart the IMAP connection. I have the same issue if I start in Offline mode - I can't reconnect until I close and restart the connection. I have TCP logs, but they have many line and I haven't found them helpful myself..

What I would really like is to mimick how I could work offline using the POP3 system.

Tx very much.

Phil

If you're using Outlook connected to Exchange, there is no way to change from Exchange mode to Pop3 mode. The only way I know of is to create a backup of your outlook/exchange offline files (*.ost), convert these to personal outlook files (*.pst), then make a new data-store in outlook and connect that datastore with anything like Pop3 or Imap.

Do you have any idea why it won't let me go into the Offline mode even while using IMAP?

No not really. I'm having trouble understanding the off-line mode of explorer and off-line files behaviour myself. Sometimes when the DHCP renews ip-leases we have clients that go into offline mode even if they still have the same IP. You could try to see if interaction with explorer helps, or a short unplugging of the network cord helps.

We tested exchange internally about two-three years ago, and had rather large problems with the setups and limitations. Microsoft is good at making large software, but they have very little feel for the concept "good-enough". Many of my customers though have exchange installed through SBS, and the only real problems arise when a server crashes, or the hassle when someone leaves a company and he/she wants the exchange data to follow them out of the company.
