Problems Upgrading from 4.3 public beta to 4.41

Many thanks for your help - all is running now except the addressbook, which I don't have a copy of - I think it's Personal.PM!

The addressbook is a file pair, the PM! is the index and the PMR is the data.

I've run into problems every way I turn, trying to upgrade my wife's computer so that she has the Spamhalter feature. In the past I upgraded simply by downloading the new version, which replaced the old, usually it picked up the mailbox too.

Every time I attempted to download 4.41, it said Pegasus was running & blew the install away - it wasn't running at all. In the end, the only solution I came up with was to remove 4,3, then my troubles started. It wasn't in the "Program" list, so couldn't be removed cleanly. All I could do was to delete it, so I did, just the Program folder, leaving the Mail folder intact (I also saved a Mail backup copy elsewhere).

4.41 then downloaded cleanly but, although the Mail & Program folders are in the same place as before, Pegasus doesn't see the mail files.

Can anyone tell me how to link the mail to the programme?

Are you sure the program was not running in the background?  Did you use Windows Task Manager to verify it was not running? to close it?

Can anyone tell me how to link the mail to the programme?

1.  Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info and note the mail directories.  I'm going to assume that these are c:\pmail for the programs and c:\pmail\mail\admin for the HOME and NEW mail directory.

2.  Use "My Computer" and find the location of the old HOME and NEW mail directories.  Since this is an old installation I'm going to assume it's c:\pmail\mail.

3.  Exit WinPMail, very important.

4.  Move all the files from c:\pmail\mail EXCEPT pmail.ini to the c:\pmail\mail\admin directory.

Now when you run WinPMail you should see all of the old files and folders.

Hi, thanks for speedy response!

First time I simply closed pmail, when that failed, second time I used task master but the install still aborted.

4.41 says mail is in c:\pmail\mail - not admin.

My computer says old files in same place.

Can't find any .ini file.

Over to you................

I see nothing wrong here.  Are you absolutely sure that the c:\pmail\mail files are not read only?  Could you provide a copy of the pmail.ini file?

Reason I couldn't see the ini file was that my windows doesnt show a view including the extension any more - v. helpful - must be an MS upgrade!

OK, some light appears - I found an admin file & copied its contents into Mail - and I can now see past correspondence folders.

Can't see addresses or old Copies to Self.

Can't see addresses or old Copies to Self.

The addressbooks are PMR&PM! file pairs and should be in the home mail directory.  The "Copies to self" is a typical folder (PMR&PMI file pair) and should should in the folder listing.

Hello Thomas,

Many thanks for your help - all is running now except the addressbook, which I don't have a copy of - I think it's Personal.PM!

Copyself was there & is now installed.

Now to start training Spamhalter!
