Pegasus Mail Suggestions
Attachments manager

As I said in another message I just had to rescue a hard disk from a failed computer, for someone who receives important legal documents.

In this occasion I would have found it handy to be able to open the folder from outside of Pmail, and see where the pdf attachments were. I had to look precisely for documents containing signed agreements and the specific numbers of commercial orders, that was the priority. Messages were less important.

Had there been an attachments folder, it would have been useful. I imagine it could be useful for other purposes too. Like direct browsing.

Many people use their mail client for receiving files that they have to modify (lawyers, translators, accountants...). Consequently Pmail could be improved in the direction of a professional use of attachments.

1) There could be an option of "Save attachments in My Documents / Pmail attachments". That would be the present "Save as", but more automatic. Of course the location could be personalized, for instance towards a usb disk. There could also be an option "Create a sub-folder" for each sender, a useful function when working with several clients.

2) There could be a backup function. When working on documents, it is always good to keep a copy of the original, in case you do something wrong. That would be an improvement of the present saving in Temp, but in would in a "Backup" folder of the Pmail programm folder. That is, it would not be easily accessible to the user, who is meant to work on a copy in "My Documents", but it will also be protected from deletion in Temp.

I imagine for instance an "Attachments" window, for those who really work seriously with attachments: list with names, size, sender, date... Also checkboxes for Delete, Save as... Maybe new markers with colours like "done", "in progress", "to do"....

It is close to what I mean.

I mean a more systematic and automatic approach, with less configuration clicks from the user. It would be made default in options, or more precisely it would be "Activate professional attachments management". Then the possibility of of adding senders in a list, or right-clicking a sender with "this is a

professional contact", and anything he sends me is copied into his

sub-folder in My Documents / Pmail attachments, and backed up.

There could be checkboxes in the "Professional Attachments" section of options. Like "Sender will also be automatically added to the address book".

Maybe in the mail windows, a right-click could show the history of this person's attachments.

But more importantly, I think that for average abilities users, the Save attachment rule is presently hidden in the daaaaaaark recesses of Pmail. I think it would be advertisement to promote it to Options.

You mean like, it reads your mind, then configures itself to suit [:P]

I have described a typical mail client interface, which you can often see for spam management for instance:

1) Activate feature

2) Add senders

From what you write plus your smiley, I assume that is what you deem unrealistic.

The solution you suggest implies the following steps:

1) Click on Tools, then to Mail filtering rules (that is classic)

2) Make a choice between new filtering rule and new filtering set

3) Make a choice between Folder is opened or close

4) Click on Add rule

5) Select Attachments

6) Write all file extensions I work with professionally

7) Click on Set

8) Select a Folder in Pmail only

9) Click on Close

10) Click on Save

All that supposing you are familiar enough with the Pmail interface, with the concept of filtering rules, etc. Which means for a minority of users in the world. And in the end, you don"t have sub-folders automatically created for each sender, and you don't have safe backup as a reference for your work.

BTW, in the process of checking that, I noticed that you can't add criteria in one move, like the + button of Thunderbird, and the OR, AND... of search engines.

But, more generally, receiving attachments for professional modifications, saving them in sub-folders for each client, backing them up in a safe place, is really what i do everyday for a living. So if you want to judge it by a [:P] , well I still have to continue doing it anyway, and it would add productivity and attractivity if the mail client could do that for me, allowing me to concentrate on the modification of documents.

What you are asking for is very much specialised to your workflow practice and can fairly easily be accomplished by filtering rules.

It is a good idea to know how your tools work before applying them to mission critical tasks.[:D] (yes, another smiley)

Once the rules are set up, you can concentrate on the modification of

documents, while the filtering and saving is done automatically.

That is not true. Receiving as attachments documents to modify, creating a folder for each client, keeping backup in a safe place, is extremely widespread.

Plus, with the spread of chat software, the mail client is now becoming relatively the place for serious communication. Especially sending documents in a work environment.

Arnaud may finally have a point with this wish.

Business users use attachments in a way that is not at all catered for in pmail at present. A previous commenter in these forums has bemoaned the way that sent items do not include the attachments.

Like it or not, the average user uses their mail folders as a file storage system and rarely saves attachments out to disk folders. If pmail wants to help non-Power Users, it really needs to overhaul it's attachment handling.

I think that the suggestion in this thread might be a useful-for-some non-default option but it would be a lot of programming effort for small rewards. Effort would be better targeted at making messages more clearly announce the presence of attachments and requiring fewer clicks to access them.

Yes, non-power users must be marketed too.

BTW, sorry if my posting a lot of messages here is missunderstood.

I post a lot overtly ignoring the programming effort needed. Not that I don't care, but because I think it is the right method in "Suggestions and Wishlists".

I think suggestions must be exposed first, and only then effort and reward estimated.

I just had to send several photographs and I found it tedious not to be able to select them all in one step. So that's the wish: multiple select for attachments.

D'oh ! I just discovered that the option for "Allow multiple file selection when adding attachments" is actually in Options -> General Settings -> Advanced Settings.

Well, first I don't see how I could ever have guessed that the option was there.

Second, I find the usefulness of multiple selection so obvious that I'm not sure there should be an option to disable it, and, if you really really really insist it will be useful in one case out of 10 000, it could at least be activated by default.

Agreed. Can't understand why there's an option at all. Must be a hangover from older versions of Peg. Definitely should be enabled by default and perhaps even removed altogether.

I read thru this thead and others and did not see this as a wish list item.

I love the drag and drop feature that I can use on the attachments window.  The multi-file selection helps a lot too.

I only wish I was able to copy and past into or even out of the attachments window.  There are many times that I want to copy an attachment from one e-mail and past it into another before sending.  As it is now, I have to save and then retrieve and insert.  Other times I just want to simple copy it and paste into another location.

I have no clue as to the code that would be involved to do this.

I think you'll find that the reason the default was set not to allow multiple selections arose from a bug in a version of Acrobat Reader which modified the standard file dialog in such a way that Pegasus (and a number of other applications) crashed when multiple selections were made.

That version of Reader is now history but some installations may still be using it and Pegasus not crashing is probably more important than the inconvenience of having to change a preference.

[/quote]You beat me 10 days with this suggestion - though I was about to make it not because I want to move attachments from one message to another, but because I get attachments from different people that I want to put in one folder, which I already have open. Dragging the attachments would be just perfect. Dragging an e-mail itself would also be useful - it should save the e-mail as a *.txt file, possibly with a default title, customizable somehow - "Sender Name - Subject", and the date of the original e-mail.
