POP Options

Thanks Thomas,

With both options set it seems to work fine for me, and as expected. I can now retreive my mail from at least 2 sources. Not having them marked as read at the server due to POP limitations is a minor inconvenience.

Forgot to add this to my earlier Post:

Is it possible to not delete incoming mail from the POP3 Postoffice, but rather only mark it as read? This would enable future access to mails outside of Pegasus, for example via a web browser from an Inernet cafe. Am not sure if this is possible, but would be really helpful.

Generally this is handled at the server level.  The POP3 server can be set to mark messages as read when downloaded and then only show unread mail via POP3.

That said, you can set WinPMail via Tools | Internet options | (Receiving)POP3 to not delete the mail on the server and then only download unread mail.  In this case WinPMail will record the message ids of the downloaded mail and then used a UIDL command before downloading to determine which messages have been downloaded before. This can significantly increase the time to download the mail if there is a lot of mail being stored on the POP3 host.  In addition, a lot of ISPs do not like you to use their POP3 servers to store mail and will delete all mail that has been successfully downloaded. Only testing can determine if you can do this.

Thanks Thomas. I'd looked on that menu before but not seen the option, after your confirmation that it's possible I dug a bit deeper and discovered the option under the specific mail account via the edit button. My ISP allows me up to 1GB online and it's often useful to be able to re-read messages if I'm away fom home.

A bit of further digging. The mails are not marked as 'read' on the POP3 Server but do remain there. Another option is also needed on the 'download controls' tab so that only messages that have not already been downloaded are downloaded. Without this option I kept getting the same mails as they were neither set as 'read' or deleted.

Go to Tools | Internet options | (Receiving)POP3, edit the POP3 setup, hit the "Download controls" tab and check "Download only unread mail "

The usual practice when retrieving mail from a POP3 host is to delete it from the host when it is successfully downloaded. If you do not delete it, you would normally expect to see it again the next time you download mail from the host. Pegasus Mail incorporates a powerful and complicated facility which allows you to leave mail on the POP3 host without deleting it, but only download mail you haven't already seen. Because the POP3 protocol does not actually provide this facility, there are some limitations on this command, the most specific being that if you run Pegasus Mail on more than one machine, each one will have a separate list of what you have already seen; so, if you download mail using one machine then access your account later from a different machine, you will probably get the mail you downloaded the first time again, where downloading the mail on the same machine you originally used would only show mail which had arrived since the last time you accessed your account. Check this control to instruct Pegasus Mail to attempt to download only mail you have not read. The effect of this control is probably meaningless if you do not also uncheck the "Delete retrieved mail on host" control. Using this feature can significantly increase the time it takes for Pegasus Mail to retrieve your new mail.
