Intermittent CreateOneFont error crashing Pegasus Mail

Thanks. I doubt HP will be particularly concerned about this as the driver has not been updated for over a year. More and more users on the network are experiencing this problem.

Actually I've found HP quite helpful in fixing their printer driver problems.  I had essentially the same type of problem with the early 2600dn and they knew about the problem and provided a fix.  Seems to me though the people developing the HP drivers expect the users to be the beta testers.  ;-(

edit:  One more thing, make sure that you completely remove the driver before you try a new install.  Most of the problems I've found with HP drivers come from mixing versions.

Hi

I recently added the Print Server role to our domain controller and used it to share a printer (my default printer) connected directly to the network. I had used a direct connection for a couple of years, but changed over to this method. The driver used to install the printer on the server is the same driver as was used before on my machine.

After using the new share \\server\printer Pegasus Mail has been having random crashes. I will open a message and an error message appears - Error initializing printer, followed by 5 error boxes labelled CreateOneFont(b) containing the text Error creating font. After the 5th box appears, Pegasus Mail crashes. The messages can be either HTML or plain text, and have included messages I have sent to myself from this PC via Mercury mailing lists.

The server OS is W2k3 R2 and my PC is WinXP SP3. The printer is a HP 4650dn.

Restarting Pegasus Mail and accessing the same message allows the message to open.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

Thanks.

I just opened an email and got several CreateOneFont(b) messages without the Error initializing printer message. The mail remained blank - clicking the view button twice caused it to display. But - it did not crash.

No idea really what is causing the problem.  WinPMail does call the printer driver each time a message is opened to determine how to display the font.  I suspect that the printer driver (or the installation of the printer)  is at least a part of the cause.  I've used the HP 2600dn that works quite in the same manner without problems so I doubt if this is really a printer problem.  It can very easily be a network problem though.  It also might a a residual problem  if you did not completely remove the direct connection printer driver before using the network connection.  I'd remove the current printer driver completely, reboot and then re-install.

Thanks, Thomas.

I had uninstalled and re-installed several times when testing the shared printer, replacing the driver each time, so I don't think that may be the problem.

I am also connected to a HP2600dn (direct connection) and a 2800dtn (on the Print Server), so I'll try setting each as the default printer for a couple of days and see if the error persists.

It's definitely associated with the way the print driver has been installed.

I have been using the 2600n as the default printer on a direct connection, and later through the print server. No problems at all. As soon as I switched back to the 4650dn through the print server, the problem returned.

This has been happening intermittently to other users on our network too. I am really reluctant to take a step backwards, install direct connections, and lose the ability to manage the 4650dn printer through Active Directory.

Anyone have any suggestions that I could try please?

Thanks

The only thing I have to offer is to go back to HP and make sure you have the latest driver.  You might also get on the direct line with them and ask them why this happens when WinPMail asks the driver how to display the fonts.  WinPMail is doing nothing other than using the windows calls to do this.

Thanks. I doubt HP will be particularly concerned about this as the driver has not been updated for over a year. More and more users on the network are experiencing this problem.

We have MS-Office installed, so I'll look into seeing how much effort is involved using Outlook and test it with the driver.

Edit:

Crikey. It's not easy, is it :) I've searched for converters - nothing I've seen seems to guarantee that the conversion will maintain message integrity. Anyone know of any professional programs out there that will guarantee this?
