Pegasus Mail Suggestions
Options and Preferences

I have been looking at Options -> User interface and, realizing that all contents could be better placed in the other categories, I found that User interface makes no sense.

  • List displays could move to Incoming mail, and mix with Folder behaviours -> Folders colouring and Folder behaviours -> Grouped view in a new Incoming mail -> Folder colours sub-category
  • Toolbars could simply move to Basic settings
  • Reporting could move to Incoming mail and become a sub-category of its own
  • Logging could move to General settings -> Advanced in a tab
  • Automatic formatting could simply move to Outgoing mail

This way, you would have a very clear, very understandable tryptic composed of General settings, Outgoing mail and Incoming mail.

And everything that is presently in User interface would even be more logically placed, and more findable.

This is a thread for those who wish changes in the Options and Preferences window.

Personally,  I think the text pages that appear for each section (General settings, Outgoing mail...) are in fact Help pages that are not requested by the user, and consequently they could be removed, in favour of a direct access to the options.

I checked in Pmail 3, and it seemed to me lighter and more convenient.

Dear Arnaud,

In mine opinion give this textpages - appear for each section - information about the opportunities you have to create your settings and they are exactly on the right place.

I wonder if, when I use a word processor, I would like a page "This will allow you to create a table" whenever I click on the table button.

Usually, when I need the definition and proper instructions for a feature I don't know, I go to the Help page for that. And, if I already understand the feature, an unrequested Help page will certainly annoy me.

Just two examples from Pmail here, in the Outgoing Mail section:

1) "Messages and Replies' allows you to tune the default settings Pegasus Mail uses when creating new messages and replies.

Was that an explanation or a tautology?

2. ...and to control the way replies are formatted in the editor, immediately followed, in the next section, by 'Message formatting' controls how Pegasus should handle...

So the user should assume that message formatting is not totally in message formatting?

I wonder if that really helps. It could be argued that instead a single click on Options should already allow me to modify a few settings.

I had a brief look at Thunderbird, Outlook Express, Foxmail, The Bat and Opera. I hope it is enough as a relevant sample.

They do approximately as I described: modifiable settings are available immediately after clicking on Options. Wordy definitions of settings and of their consequences are in the help files.

I had a look at the Help files in Pmail 4.5 : the long texts that are present in the GUI, those for the sections of Options, are absent in the Help files. I.e.  General settings, Ougoing mail, Incoming mail and User interface are not links in the Preferences and settings page of the Help files. I.e. they are explained in the GUI but not in the Help files.

In "Internet Options" I see a "General" tab that allows me to specify my address. I wonder if I shouldn't be allowed to specify my real name in that General tab too.

Presently my real name is in "Basic Settings". It could be useful to have it closer to SMTP settings.

Same for the "Organization" string, which is presently in "Advanced Settings". I would never have had the idea to go looking for it there.

Maybe all options that can make the sent mail unusable, or options that demand an understanding of codes, could be gathered in "Advanced" categories or, better, tabs.

I think Mime options are in that case.

Also, due to the strategic importance, I think all options for deleted messages should be gathered in one specific category.
