RECEIVING e-mails

No: I was not until yesterday, when a friend spotted my error.  I wish I had seen your post long before this but I regret to say I have not logged onto this site recently.

Many thanks for the trouble you and others have taken to help me.  I am embarrassed at people's time I have wasted through not reading instructions carefully enough.

All is well and the matter is closed.

I cannot send my e-mails now that I have just been connected to TalkTalk broadband, who do not support Pegasus.  I have asked their advice and they have helped me revise my settings but I still get an error message.  The suggestion was made that I should remove and create my e-mail account with Pegasus but I do not understand how to do that.  Please can you help as I would be devastated to lose my special Pegasus facilities, i.e. the group distribution lists.  These are important to me.  Thank you.

Can you give more information about your setup?

What server and settings are you using for outgoing (SMTP)?

What's the error message?

It does not matter if they support Pegasus Mail or not, what you need from them is their host names and other special connection information to be used by any POP3 email client.  Here's what TalkTalk says about their email settings.

Settings

  • E-mail address: username@talktalk.net
  • Incoming mail Sever: mail.talktalk.net

    (if asked:)

    Incoming mail account type: POP3

    Incoming mail port: 110

  • Outgoing mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.talktalk.net

    (if asked:)

Log on using SPA: leave unchecked

    Authentication: none

    Outgoing mail port: 25

    Use SSL: leave unchecked

  • Account name (Username): username@talktalk.net
  • Password: password

You will need your TalkTalk Broadband username and password. You'll

find these in the welcome letter TalkTalk sent. If you cannot find your

welcome letter and cannot remember your broadband username and

password, you can call free of charge from a TalkTalk landline on 0870 0875 562 to retrieve them

You need to go to Tool | Internet Options and check that yuo have the correct POP3 and SMTP settings.

Thanks so much for all the information.  I can't get into it all just now because of time constraints but appreciate your prompt help and hope I can solve my problem that way.

Further to my earlier message to you I have now followed your advice but most of the outgoing mail settings do not appear on my "Sending" box.  The only one from the list you gave was the first one, Server: smtp.talktalk.net  I cannot see "log on, authentication, outgoing mail port or use SSL "

What about the "dialling" settings?  I used to be on dial-up, with an automatic hang up when finished.

So appreciate your help as am feeling pretty frustrated.

They are there under the "Security" tab when editing the POP3 and SMTP setups.  The outgoing mail port, authentication and Direct SSL is in the SMTP setup.  Again go through both the POP3 and SMTP setup, all the data is there.

Thanks so much.  Under my Pegasus programme Tool.Internet options I only have the following tabs

General, receiving, sending, dialling

I cannot see a security tab.   I nearly went through the Pegasus Wizard set-up and put in new names, etc, but didn't want to make things worse so cancelled.

When I was connected to broadband I only connected via phone instructions: I did not have an installation disk.  Is this relevant?

Further to my earlier message today, 3rd Nov, I have now found the security tab and all is in order.  However, I have now managed to do something really stupid.  I have made changes which have stopped me receiving mail as well.  Sorry.  I think I will have to get someone to come to my home.

I have honestly tried to do everything I can but I am still getting the following error message from Pegasus.  However, this is now when I try to pick up my e-mails, not send them.

[*] Connection established to 62.24.128.134

>> 0058 +OK AVG POP3 Proxy Server 8.0.159/8.0.175 [270.9.0/1773]

<< 0014 USER jecaton

>> 0024 +OK Password required.

<< 0015 PASS XXXXXXXX

>> 0020 -ERR Login failed.

If there is no more help you can give me is there any chance you would feel able to give me a phone number so that I could talk to you?  I am in the UK.

Thanks.

I have just realised that I have sent a message to myself so here is one to you!

I have done everything I can but am still unable to receive my e-mails, despite going through the Pegasus Set-up Wizard carefully.  Here is the error message that Pegasus posts.

I should be so grateful for any further advice. It's good to be able to at least send e-mails.  (I can of course receive them on the Talktalk site but that does not solve my problems.)

Turn off your AVG mail proxy and connect directly to the mail server with Pegasus.

Many thanks for your prompt reply and apologies for my mistake.  I have now unticked the option for sending and receiving e-mails via the AVG e-mail scanner, but this is the message I got when I tried to pick up my e-mails in Pegasus.

I regret I cannot answer your question re the numbers.  Talktalk said they could not give their numbers to me as they constantly change.  I do not know my address and cannot bother friends on a Saturday evening!

OK, it looks like you are now connecting directly to mail.talktalk.net (62.24.128.134).

Out of interest, what were you using before - dial-up by any chance?

Are you sure you are now using Talk-Talk to connect to the internet?

( Start your browser and go to showip.net and check what it says - IP address and network owner.)

It is receiving e-mails which is the problem, sending is now fine.  I was using dial-up before and I am quite sure I m using Talktalk to connect to the internet, having registered with them and had my first bill!

I did what you said and the network owner is opal telecom dsl.  The user agent is mozilla/4.0
