Martin, this would affect all applications, not only Pegasus Mail, hence it cannot be the issue here ...

Sometimes - and I have no idea what I am doing to trigger it - the Pegasus new message screen displays strange characters in place of the standard ones.  For example, today it suddenly started displaying a capital E with an acute accent instead of a question mark.  Saving the message, exiting and restarting Pegasus, and retrieving the message makes it display correctly, (the E acute now displays as a question mark), so what is stored (and presumably sent) is normal, and it is simply a question of the display options.  What am I doing to trigger this, and what can I do when it happens, to get back to a normal English display?  (I couldn't find anything in any of the help files about this)

When I have had similar issues it turned out to be hardware/video driver related.  What type of computer and how old?  Can you run any diagnostics to check it out?

My hardware is probably 4 or 5 years old, a P-4 HP Pavilion running XP-Pro.  Diagnostics are all fine, and this issue is totally confined to Pegasus, (No other app does it.)  No, I think there is some sort of  toggle in Pegasus which I am triggering inadvertently.

I had rather forgotten about this, but probably should update it, for the benefit of any others with similar problems.  I eventually figured out that I was toggling my keyboard into an alternate language layout.  I never did figure out just how, but I now know that if it happens I simply need to go to the keyboard layout and change it back to US English.

I have the same problem -- the keyboard toggles to "French", usually when composing an email.  It never seems to happen except with Pegasus, and is probably due to some strange typo that I make, although NOT the key combination that is supposed to switch the keyboard.  Call me paranoid, but I suspect that Pegasus is more than an innocent bystander, now that I hear it is happening to someone else.

I get this too from time to time (XP Pro), always after a period of use, though I have never diagnosed the actual trigger.  I usually notice that double quotes and @ have swapped, which may be a US keyboard setting kicking in instead of my usual UK.

How about these reasons:

  1. You might be using Pegasus Mail more often than any other application so it's more likely to encounter this issue therein.
  2. You're a heavy keyboard shortcut user and there's a shortcut very close (literally) to the one configured for switching keyboard drivers.

1. Quite possible.

2. Don't really use keyboard shorcuts when creating a message in Pmail. But, the keyboard shift code is set to left-alt + shift + 0.  If my left thumb accidentally touched the left-alt key when typing a ) then this would do it. Most logical explanation so far.  I'll just have to try and keep my fat fingers(thumb) under better control.  :-)  And monitor its happening.  If I have a ) in earlier typed text, then the probability of this being the answer definitely goes up.  Unfortunately, no other settable key combination is likely to reduce my odds of fat-fingering this situation into existence.

I am less willing to accept your suggestion that Pegasus has nothing to do with either this or the other issue I identified in a separate post, (sudden loss of all carriage returns, resulting in the message I am typing being re-formatted into one great long line.)  When Pegasus suddenly drops into an alternate keyboard layout it is not changing the keyboard layout in Windows - if one exits from Pegasus and goes, for example, to MS-Word, the keyboard layout is unchanged.  Indeed, exiting from Pegasus and then signing back in to Pegasus corrects the problem without explicitly changing the keyboard layout at all.  No, Pegasus is toggling the keyboard layout, and it is doing it only in Pegasus, just as it is toggling the loss of line breaks and formatting.  Like jss1941 I have no idea what key strokes are responsible, (presuming that there is some key combination that is responsible), but whatever it is, it is unique and specific to Pegasus.

I'm afraid there won't be a solution unless someone comes up with the key combination causing it ...

A suggestion/possibility from a help group:

Go to Control Panel: Regional & Language. Click Details to see what

languages you have loaded. Click Key Settings to see the shortcut key

that can be used to switch between languages.

On my machine the keyboard switch is Left Shift + Alt keys

Martin
