Folder Hierarchy Lost

This problem *is* repeatable - I'm unable to move any folder at any time.

I'm using Mercury/32 v4.62 on XP.

One thing you might try.  Install Pegasus Mail on the Mercury/32 system and point the mailboxes at the Mercury/32 mailbox structure.  You can then work directly with the mail folders.  If nothing else this should make it easier to re-build the folder structure.

I hope someone can help me!

I recently lost my folder/tray

hierarchy. Everything had been working normally, when suddenly all

trays/folders ended up under the Root.

I've tried re-creating the

structure but every time I move a folder, it looks like it's been moved

but then when I restart Pegasus, it's back under the root again.

Looking

at the hierarch.pm file, I can see that the new container Tray is

getting created, but the "parent" of the folder I'm trying to move does

not get updated.

If I manually edit the hierarch.pm file, I can create the structure I need, but it's a very laborious process.

I've tried deleting the .pm so that a new one is created, so I know I'm starting with a clean copy.

Any ideas please?

Thanks,
Steve

PS - I posted this in the Mercury forum but it was moved to the Pegasus forum in error. This is a Mercury issue NOT Pegasus

Sorry that I moved your previous post but it didn't refer to Mercury at all, only Pegasus. Based on your new post I assume you are accessing a Mercury mailbox via IMAP from Pegasus.

It's however very difficult to say something about this unless you provide an example that can be repeated.

In case there is a problem with the hierarch.pm file itself you could try try renaming it. The system will then create a new file the next time you log in with IMAP from Pegasus. If you can make changes normally in that one it might be worth the trouble to rearrange the folders. If not you can rename the old file back to hierarch.pm again. Make sure there is no IMAP access to the mailbox when renaming the file, though.

Hi Rolf,

Yes - I'm accessing a Mercury IMAP account from Pegasus (having already had the same problem from Outlook Express).

I have already tried renaming the hierarch.pm and, as you say, Mercury then creates a new one. However, this doesn't solve the problem.

I can create a new folder or a new tray and the new record is added to hierarch.pm correctly.

However, if I try to move any folder into a tray, it does not get moved - i.e the "parent" field in the hierarch.pm file is not updated. However, the "move" operation does not return any errors back, so Pegasus initially shows that the move has taken place.

For now I have manually edited the whole hierarch.pm file to restore my folder structure (an exercise which took several hours) and have taken a backup copy, so I'm happy to try anything you suggest on the copy which is currently being used.

This problem *is* repeatable - I'm unable to move any folder at any time.

I'm using Mercury/32 v4.62 on XP.

It's been working fine (on this and earlier versions) on this machine for many years. One day, without any obvious cause, my folder structure suddenly disappeared. From what I know now, I'm guessing the original hierarch.pm got lost/corrupted and so a new copy was created, but this still does not explain why I can't move folders.

Incidentally, I have several other users no the same server. There folder hierarchy for these was not lost although they've now also unable to move folders.

Please help!

Regards,
Steve

I tried the following:

1. Created new toplevel folder "tray1"

2. Created new toplevel mailbox "box1"

3. Moved "box1" inside "tray1"

4. Restarted the mail client

In this scenario "box1" was still in "tray1", and  hierarch.pm was correctly updated.

Do you have any software running on the server that might interfere with Mercury's access to mailbox files, for instance a real-time protection anti-virus program?
