Hi guys,

Sorry to bother you, but I have looked through the forums for a couple of hours now and still may have misssed the answer ...

The problem is I run several games servers and forums and have just started using M32 (48 hours) when I was getting problems with MS Exchange on our forums. On top of this I am now trying to host my own nameserver - sigh

I don't wish to use my home email account to contact "dills" that we ban from the server and was trying to use 1 x of my domains - tals.com.au, to do that.

I did have an account on my home PC that would allow me to relay messages through tals.com.au with MS Exchange server but since I have swapped to M32 the SMTP doesn't relay my email.

I can telnet into port 25 on the mailserver from another PC on its local network, but if I try to telnet in from "outside" via the router/firewall - I am not getting any of my characters echoed ?

I have been mucking about with this since about 8:00AM AEST and am now a bit "un-sober"...

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated ;)

For those who play online games http://www.ausdod.com aka http://tals.com.au/wadforums ;)

cheers

Only reason why telnet locally and not externally works is if your default gateway is wrong. If you set up the firewall to allow ping to go through, you should be able to ping the machine from inside as well as outside. When that succeeds telnet should also succeed, unless something within your firewall is blocking - either your gateway firewall or your external one.

You could examine the traffic through wireshark from a pc connected to the net (but then you have to have hubs and not switches - so all traffic is visible on all appliance sockets).

Have you passed port 25 from the router to the machine running Mercury/32?  The router must have some way to translate this port to an internal IP address.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the quick responses ;)

I haven't changed my ADSL Router/Firewall etc from when I was using MS Exchange. I have routed TCP on Ports 25, 110, 53 plus a few others all to the internal server(s).

mmm - I may reboot the server and see what happens - no help ..

The modules I am running are :-

1. Mercury Core Process

2. Mercury Finger Server

3. Mercury POP3 Server

4. Mercury IMAP4 Server

5. Mercury SMTP Server

6. Mercury SMTP Client (end-to-end)

Is there any problem with that mixture ? Any suggestions on the settings for the Outlook account ?

cheers

No problems with your coexistent modules. You haven't by any chance configured MercuryS to operate at another IP?

If you can telnet to the IP address to port 25 from the internal lan and not externally then you are not routing port 25 to the system running Mercury/32.

No problem with the mix and Outlook should not be any different than any other mail client when going into the standard ports.  If you are trying to use a Direct SSL connection then you'll need to open the other ports for direct ssl.

You are telnetting from a machine that is ACTUALLY outside the LAN? Not just using your external IP from a LAN machine? Most routers will not support this.

As stated above, you have a networking issue, not a Mercury issue, as even if MercS was denying connections from non-local IP's, you would at least get an SMTP reject message in telnet.

Local firewall on the Merc server denying "internet" connections?

Not sure what you mean here, I telnet into my server via host name or IP address and it goes out and back the to Mercury/32 machine.  Telnet to port 25 of tstephenson.com,  209.128.94.2 and/or 192.168.1.2 from a system on the lan all provide the following since the router  at 209.128.94.2 NATs port 25 to 192.168.1.2

Hi guys,

I have 2 x broadband connections and 2 x Lans, 1 x Public, 1 x Private. Although they can connect through a "orange" Lan.from Private to Public (Smoothwall).

I can't test Telnetting to Port 25 from work as all ports (except 80 & 443) here are blocked - but I would be happy if someone "out there" could try and telnet into port 25.

The address is:-

tals.com.au

IP: 59.167.194.170

I have run an IP checker from the web/mail server, to see if my ISP was blocking the port 25 - but it is reported as being open.

Thanks for your help,

 cheers
