moving pmail to a new computer

It is nice to get help from a true expert! You hit the nail on the head with the read only. Somehow the whole folder was designated read only. I changed the attribute and now everything is working. BTW, I am running win2k pro. Again, thank you.

I  copied the pmail folder to d drive of the new computer, downloaded the newest version and ran setup into the same folder. Now, when I try to start it, it comes up with a sign in window and says the user that should be the sign in name, doesn't exist. How can I fix this?

Not sure but it looks like the path or drive letter is incorrect.  Use pconfig.exe  from the program directory and check out the HOME and NEW mail directory spec.

Thank you very much for the help. However, when I went into pconfig.exe it showed drive C. I changed the path to drive D and hit Y to change, then X to save and exit. I tried to pull up pmail, but got the same "no such user" error. I went back to pconfig and, once again it shows C drive. I tried the same thing again, but still shows C drive when all is done.

How can I get it to change and stay changed to D drive?

There are 2 saves involved.  After you change the c: to a d: then you continue down until you get a prompt "Accept this data [n]"  and change the N to Y and hit enter.  You then hit the X to save and exit the program.

That is what I did. The only thing different was that when I hit "y" the screen went away rather than changing to a "y" and allowing me to hit enter. After the screen went away, I then had to option to hit X to save and exit. What am I doing wrong to not allow the "n" to change to "y" and then let me hit enter?

Sorry I got it wrong, just hitting the Y saves the setup.  You should immediately go back in and verify the data was changed.  After than you can hit the exit to save the data.   If this does not work for you then the only thing I can tell you to do is to delete (move/rename) the pmail.cfg file in the WinPMail program directory and restart WinPMail.  It will prompt to for the directory name and then enter the d:\pmail\mail path.

Thank you, Mr. Stephenson for all your help. I tried again, with the same results, so I renamed pmail.cfg and started pmail. I put in the d:pmail\mail path which has a file, user.cfg and a folder named sds which is the user name. When I started pmail the splash screen came up with the "mailbox is locked" message and, as usual, I clicked "continue". When I clicked everything just went away and pmail did not start.

I believe you still have a problem with the paths or is could be a rights problem.   It's also possible that the files are read only, it would give the same indication.
Edit: What OS is involved here?  It almost sounds like you are running Vista.
