still nothing...

Yes it seems like something is blocking me locally. Still, I even tried switching the firewall off (with Internet disconnected) and still wasnt able to connect to a mail account. Funny thing is tough, some bot tried earlier and it looks like it already had more success than me -.-

Ill try to figure out whats blocking my login attempts locally.

Your mail server should be assigned a static ip (either manually or via DHCP Static Lease) otherwise, if the assigned IP changes your port 25 forward will be pointing at a vacuum or the wrong machine.

What response do you get to:

telnet 127.0.0.1 25

?

[/quote]

I do have a fix local IP, still, I closed Port 110 after this incident. CMD says that telnet is not recognized. I think that's a Vista/Win7 thing where this command is blocked. I just cant remember right now where the settings for this are hidden. Maybe I should wait till I reinstall WinXP where I exactly know how what works.

Thanks to both of you for your help so far.

Hi everyone. I'm really sorry to bother you with such stupid questions. I installed Mercury today and I've been working on it for a couple of hours now. Still, I cant do the most basic stuff.

First, I'm not sure if I've even created some users yet. I've added under "Configuration -> Manage Local Users" a few. Are these now regular Email Accounts? I'm asking because I cant even send emails to these users. In Mercury's SMTP-Server-Window it says the following:

Connection from 19x.xxx.xx.xx, Sun Feb 08 xx:xx:xx 2009
EHLO mailxx.MyISP.com
MAIL FROM:<MyEverydayEmailadress@MyISP.com>
RCPT TO:<test@MyDynDNSDomain.bla>
Relay attempt: from <MyEverydayEmailadress@MyISP.com> to <test@MyDynDNSDomain.bla>.
553 We do not relay non-local mail, sorry.
30 sec. elapsed, connection closed Sun Feb 08 xx:xx:xx 2009

I've created a User named "test", so he should be a local user. Why doesnt Mercury accept Emails for that user? That leads me again to the question: How do I create an User?

My second big problem is: I dont know how to access any emailaccount with any Emailclient. What do I fill in for Ingoing/outgoing Servers? Simply the myName.dynDNS.org doesnt seem to work :/
I feel really stupid right now. It would be great if someone could at least point me at the right direction (The manual didnt provide me with the basics Im looking for, its too technical).

Thanks

Mm, understanding how mail servers work is a bit complicated and unfortunately technical as well. If you take it one thing at the time you will eventually have it figured out, though.

As for your questions:

Yes, "Configuration -> Manage Local Users" is where you add users.

To make Mercury accepts messages for <test@MyDynDNSDomain.bla> you will need to add that domain to "Configuration -> Mercury core module" -> Local domains". Please read the help text for this section carefully, it must be correct to get everything to work as expected.

In your email client you should enter the hostname or IP address of the server. When accessing the server from the Internet you will need to make sure that you have opened the right ports on your router/firewall and forwarded them to the server, and that there isn't any firewall software on the server that blocks these ports.

Hey thanks a lot. I solved the problem where mails were refused

(Local Domains) even touh I still dont fully understand the potential

of this function. But it works now.

Never the less I

still cant access the mailaccounts in anyway. I tried the domainname, I

tried external & internal IP and I tried 127.0.0.1. Its always as

if there isnt there wasnt even a server running.

NAT Settings are

fine. Hardwarefirewall is forwarding Ports 25 & 110.

Softwarefirewall isnt blocking Mercury in anyway (I disabled

softwarefirewall for testing purposes).

I've attachted the mercury.ini where I only changed the domainnames to MyDynDNS.net.

EDIT:

The SMTP Client window shows an error:

21:13:47: processing job MO000006
Resolved MX for 'MyDynDNS.net' to 92.xxx.xx.xxx
Connecting to 92.xxx.xx.xxx
Connection error.

I stubmeld across the term "MX" a few times related to relaying. Still, I cant figure out what this error means. Why is the server trying to connect to itself?

oh, and the general/incoming and outgoing jobs are always "pending" in the main core window. Don't know if that's bad too, probably yes :D

Local domains will need a bit more work. Try something like this:

[Domains]
Mercury: Mercury <-- this should be the LAN hostname of your server
Mercury: MyDynDNS.net <-- this is your domain name

Mercury: mail.MyDynDNS.net <-- the MX record for the domain should point to a name in the form host.domain.com, for instance mail.MyDynDNS.net
Mercury: [192.168.26.5] <-- this should be the IP address in your local network

Mercury: [92.107.43.86] <-- this should be the public IP address, but if you have a dynamic IP this won't be known and can't be included

When I try to connect to 92.107.43.86 with SMTP there is a reply from a mailserver identifying itself as "CyberPunk ESMTP server". However, cyberpunk.dyndns.net apparently points to 80.64.128.23, which gives no answer on SMTP. I can't find any MX record for the domain.

mail.MyDynDNS.net... how or where do i set that up? Or does the Server automatically reply to mail.host.com?

I think that's the sticking point. Only thing that confuses me is, that I can actually send and recieve emails with the server.

I only can't access the mailaccount. Is the procedure different when the mailclient runs on the same machine as the mailserver?

If you can now send and receive mail we'll leave your mystery domain a mystery.

To set a MX record for the domain and assign DNS names you need to log in to your DNS provider and add those records. They will presumably have instructions there to tell you what to do. If there isn't a MX record the sending server will attempt to find an IP address for the domain itself, which in your case should work as well, but will require a second NS lookup.

If connecting from a mail client on the same computer you should set the server address to localhost or 127.0.0.1.

The server name part in Local domains is significant only when running in a Netware environment, otherwise it can be anything, and doesn't have to match the hostname if you don't want it to. It should be the same in all the entries, though.

Okay, Im not so sure anymore if I actually can recieve messages. Everytime I send an email from an external Server to Mercury, the SMTP Server says:

The 30 seconds look to me like a timeout, as outgoing mails need 1-2 secs :)

I put my domain in this http://www.mxtoolbox.com/diagnostic.aspx website's tool. I got:

So it seems the Server is reachable, but it doesnt accept any mails? My Firewall says that Mercury is listening to the following ports: 25, 79, 80, 110, 143

I forwarded 25 and 110 through the NAT, do I need to do more here?

Further I've gone wild on the Local Domains and just entered every imaginable name/adress.

I'm still unable to connect to a mailaccount. Every client gives me a "connection refused/denied" almost immediatly. Doesnt matter if I use 127.0.0.1, Lan IP, external IP or domain. What else could be wrong here? I have a DHCP Router if this changes anything :/

<P>Okay, Im not so sure anymore if I actually can recieve messages. The 30 seconds look to me like a timeout, as outgoing mails need 1-2 secs :)

Turn on session logging in MercS for more detail.

Looks good.

So it seems the Server is reachable, but it doesnt accept any mails? My Firewall says that Mercury is listening to the following ports: 25, 79, 80, 110, 143

I forwarded 25 and 110 through the NAT, do I need to do more here?

You only need 110 open/forwarded if you are connecting to your local Mercury POP server from outside your LAN, otherwise it is a hole you should have shut.

Further I've gone wild on the Local Domains and just entered every imaginable name/adress.

For each mail received with a domain part listed in "Local Domains", Core will attempt to deliver the mail to the local username part.

Your mail server should be assigned a static ip (either manually or via DHCP Static Lease) otherwise, if the assigned IP changes your port 25 forward will be pointing at a vacuum or the wrong machine.

What response do you get to:

telnet 127.0.0.1 25

?

The second SMTP delivery example is for an external address (test@mxtoolbox.com). As you don't accept mail for other domains than your own it's refused, which is the correct action. The first attempt should have succeded, though. Try temporarily switching on session logging to get a complete log of everything that happens during the session. (Remember switching it off afterwards!)

For SMTP delivery you need only port 25 open on the Internet firewall. If you want POP3 access from the Internet to mailboxes you will need port 110 as well, and port 143 if you want to use IMAP.

The computer running Mercury should have a fixed IP address in the local network, otherwise port forwarding from the firewall/router won't work if the IP is reassigned.

If you can't get through with POP3 even using 127.0.0.1 on the same machine there is something blocking access. Make sure to switch off the Windows firewall and any other firewall software that might be active (some anti-virus programs include firewall capabilities).
