Reading email causes pegasus to crash

Yes, surely stability comes before features.  A program that randomly crashes should be considered unstable.

I would love graphics, etc. but not at the expense of crashes and restarts.

Cheers. SJS

Running pegasus 4.41 on WinXp.

We have some business correspondence from someone in China. When we open this email in pegasus it causes a crash with a message "The instruction at 0x7c9106f7 referenced memory at 0x0036fffd. The memory could not be read..."

We were using BearHtml 4.54, but have since upgraded to BearHtml 4.63 but the problem still occurs. However, with the older version of BearHtml the crash occurred much faster. Now, you have to open and close the particular message multiple times for it to occur.

This is not an isolated email which causes this problem (others from this same source cause a similar behaviour).

It may be invalid html... but I still would hope it wouldnt crash pegasus.

Any suggestions.

Hello,

this is almost certainly a problem with character conversion from some defined character set into Utf-8 used by Bearhtml/Pegasus Mail.  I would appreciate a copy of this problem message to be sent to me at irelam@telus.net. Would you at the same confirm that the message when it works ok, and is in fact drawing a meaningful message on the screen. For example all of the character set, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwan etc, produce similar shapes on the screen, but are read differently.

I will send you an email shortly under separate cover...  I suspect you

are right about the character set issues since I had trouble running it through the w3c validator. The mail is primarily in

english, with a Sig that is in Chinese (name, address, and a brief

advertisement line).

In the meantime, I have had one of my colleagues, who can read  Chinese, verify that the displayed Chinese characters are readable and meaningfully displayed.

Just to confirm I have received the sample message offline. I have viewed it and confirmed its display with the originiator.  I have also experienced the crash after multiple openings. I will try to capture some system trace info next.

Martin,

can I help with crash dumps or ICONV issues?

Sorry to be a party pooper, but the only way I could stop Pmail from crashing when trying to read badly formatted HTML messages... Remove BearHTML and let Pmail render the message. Exit Pmail, rename BearHTML.dll to something like BearHTML.dll.disable.

Restart Pmail and try to view the message.

 Good Luck. SJS.

Perfectly acceptable solution, as long as you don't want graphics etc
