If you go into the MercuryC config menu & enable session logging you will get a transcript of the actual exchange of messages between the client and server, which is usually a lot more helpful than the General Log. (Also remember to turn it off after troubleshooting as it eats disk space fairly rapidly.)

I am very new to Mecury Mail and I am having problems with it that I do not understand.  I have done alot of reading the past three days and have yet to come up with an answer.  Here is what I have done.

I have a website for our organization that is run by Joomla! 1.5  I have installed an extension called DT Register that allows people to register online for trainings that we put on.   The program then sends a confirmation email to the person.

I use server 2003 to run the website and xampp to run joomla.  I have taken out the original Mercury Mail that came with xampp and installed 4.62 version of Mercury Mail.  All I need is for the email to be relayed to the person signing up to the class.  When I do a test message using Mercury  I get back the error FF servicing queue.

I have set up a gmail account to be the smtp relay  and in the MercuryC protocol I have placed these setting

smtp.gmail.com

connection type port 465 SSL STARTTLS

and entered the user name and password.

What am I missing here.

Error FF generally means it cannot connect to the host.  Turn on session logging in MercuryC to get a complete log of the process.  Might be that something is blocking Mercury/32 access to the internet.  Firewall?

Not sure, this is what I use and both work for me in MercuryC

(b) -SMTP STARTTLS -

  Server host name: smtp.gmail.com
  Server TCP/IP port: 587
  SSL/TLS: via STARTTLS
SMTP Authentication: Login to the SMTP server using POP3 username/password

(c) - SMTP via SSL -

  Server host name: smtp.gmail.com
  Server TCP/IP port: 465
  SSL/TLS: via direct ssl connection
SMTP Authentication: Login to the SMTP server using POP3 username/password

Okay I have made the changes you have suggested along with these changes I found on the internet.

http://www.zoe.vc/2008/mercury-mail-transport-system-fur-externe-mail-konfigurieren/?lan=english

I still get the errorr FF sevicing queue

So I am again at a lose as to what to do next.  Is there some sort of config file that I can post that might help with determing the problem?

I changed the Server Host name to our internal exchange server IP address and it will send mail to internal staff.  But when I try to send and email to an external address I get  error 550 5.7.1 unable to relay.  Do you know what this is about?

E 20090317 114948 840 Error connecting to smtp.gmail.com.

This says you are not using the correct MercuryC options.  You should be using port 587 and STARTTLS or port 465 and Direct SSL with smtp.gmail.com  Again, turn on MercuryC session logging to see exactly what is going on between MercuryC and the server at the TCP/IP level.
I changed the Server Host name to our internal exchange server IP address and it will send mail to internal staff.  But when I try to send and email to an external address I get  error 550 5.7.1 unable to relay.  Do you know what this is about?
Sure, the Exchange host is setup to block relaying and you are trying to relay.   Depending on the host you may be able to use the ESMTP AUTH to authenticate to the server and be allowed to relay.
