Thanks for your help Rolf and Thomas.

It was a firewall that was preventing any emails with VBA content.  It did not matter if the attachment had an actual macro in it, only that if the creator of the file had macros enabled in their version of Microsft Word or Excel that would be enough of a VBA flag for the firewall to stop it.

I can create a new excel file and copy the info from this file and then send the new file as an attachment and it will go thru.

Even if we delete all the contents of this excel sheet and attach it the same problem.

We have seen the same problem with some MS Word files but a lot less often.

We can send this email from an internal account thru Mercury and it will be delivered, it just seems to be with how MercuryD is handling it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Help,  I have been have a problem with retreiving emails using MercuryD.  Certain emails with a Word or Excel attachment will not be retrieved.

My latest example is an email with an Excel attachment.  It is not every Excel attachment though.

here is a protion of the log file

13:43:27.875: --- Fri Apr 24 13:43:27 2009 ---
13:43:27.875: Connect to 'mail.****', timeout 30.

The first this I would do is increase the timeout to something like 300 seconds, for a server 900 seconds would not be too long but I find that 300 is adequate most of the time.

Does not look like a TCP/IP timeout but it does look like the server quit talking to the client.  They may have a timeout on the other side as well.

13:43:29.875:

I can create a new excel file and copy the info from this file and then send the new file as an attachment and it will go thru.

Even if we delete all the contents of this excel sheet and attach it the same problem.

We have seen the same problem with some MS Word files but a lot less often.

We can send this email from an internal account thru Mercury and it will be delivered, it just seems to be with how MercuryD is handling it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Well tried extending the timeout to 300.  The error happens within 5 sec.

On the report it still says 'timeout 30' but under MercuryD it shows that it is set to 300.  Tried restarting Mercury and the report still only shows 30.

Any more suggestions to look at?

Now it's time to look further down the line.  There may be something else timing out and it can be on the other end as well.  One thing to test would be use MercuryD to download the same message from two separate servers.   If one works and the other does not then it's time to look look for problems on the host (or route to host) of the problem server.

I doubt it this is any sort of Mercury problem though since I regularly download large attachments from various accounts without any problems at all.

Are you checking more than one POP3 Account with MercD or just one?

If it is only one try to set another one and see if that one works, so if test POP3 Check works then check if you are able to connect to specific POP3 account from any other E-Mail Client and if that work check Local and Default User set in MercD for that account as there can also be catch for receiving this error?

Ok, setup another pop3 account on another server.  Got the same error using that same email with the Excel sheet attached.

It isn't the size of the attachment or necessarily an Excel/Word attachment problem in that we get other Word/Excel documents from other people or even that same person.  The same sender can then send a different Excel sheet and it will come thru.  We have had the sender try to send that same attachment several times and it will not come thru.

It is not always the same sender, it is very random.

We have taken that same Excel sheet cleared all contents and saved it as the same name and different name and the Excel sheet will not come thru.  It doesn't appear to be a timeout problem as the error occurs immediately upon download of that email.

Could we have a sample of the Excel sheet with all contents cleared out to test with? It seems to be something related to the document itself.

In my case send it to techsupp@tstephenson.com.  I get so much spam to that address already it's not realistic to try and hide it.  ;-)

Received the Excel spreadsheet and tested it by sending it to my local ISP account and GMail and downloaded by two separate instances of MercuryD.  No problems at all.  Running Mercury/32 on WinXP Pro and MCE.  Tested with both v4.62 and v4.70 (RC2).  I still suspect that your problem is at the winsock level and might be a packet fragmentation problem.

Got is as well (the address was slightly misspelled, but I found it in the Admin mailbox), and have sent it out several ways, including having it picked up by MercuryD, all worked. Do you have any anti-virus software running on the server that might trigger on anything in this specific Excel sheet?
