emails disappearing

It might be that the emails are gone and I am not looking at things correctly. While in classic mode, when I click the folders icon, I see a listing of the various folders. The listing has the name and after that is two sets of numbers with a colon in the middle, ie. 837:504. When I go to these folders, I first noticed it with the new mail folder, the folder shows only the number of messages in the first number, ie 837 messages.

What is the second number? For some reason, I was thinking this was read:unread. Is this incorrect? If so, what do these numbers represent?

Of course what brought it all about is still a problem, all my newest mail, on the 26th, suddenly disappeared from my new mail folder for no apparent reason.

Thank you for any help.

Hello,

I went through all my holiday spam this morning and deleted around 1000 messages. I am running 98SE, I have PM set for deleted mail to remain in the deleted mail folder.

For some reason, all the new mail disappeared from my new mail folder. That is, stuff already there on the 22nd and back is still there, but not the stuff I went through this morning. When I go to folders, it shows 698:483. In the new mail folder it only shows 698. The new mail folder does not give me the option to check consistency or reindex as other folders do.

Also, none of the new stuff is in the deleted folder. So, it appears the new stuff I did not delete is actually in the new mail folder, but I can't see it. Any and all help appreciated.

1.  Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info and note the HOME mail directory.

2.  Exit WinPMail.

3.  Go to the HOME mail directory and edit the state.pmj file.  Go to the [Folders] section and delete the line beginning with the equal sign (=).  Save and exit.

Thank you very much for the help, however, nothing changed. I did as you said, then restarted pmail and it still shows the same. Anything else?

How about trying the classic mode to see what happens.

1.    Uncheck Tools | Options | Preview mode "Ctrl+W activates the preview and selects the new mail folder "

2.    Hit the "LIST" button in the folder view.

There is no list button showing in my folder view, but I think I may already be using the classic view. Is the other the paned view that looks like outlook? All I show is one folder at a time in separate windows.

Hmmm, went to folders and changed to preview just to see if that would help, but no joy. Still showing the ones I can't see as unread when I look at the list of folders, but cannot see them in the new mail folder.

BTW, It is normal for me to keep as many as several thousand emails in the new mail folder before I store them somewhere so it is not a problem of too many emails in the folder.

If you are already using the "List" mode then there should be a button called "Preview" to show the three pane mode.

The windows in the new mail folder are controlled by the state.pmj and pmail.ini settings.

pmail.ini

New mail folder window rectangle          = 0 0 0 0

State.pmj

[FOLDER]
New mail=-84,22,974,614,"267,399,112,5,34,0"

I tried going to edit/select all and copy to a new folder. Shows the same with those showing unread not showing in the folder. Reindexed the new folder and still shows the same way. In the folder listing shows read and unread, but only the number showing read shows up in the folder itself although many of those are actually unread.
