The change user has been removed due to problems with crashing.  You can run multiple instances of Pegasus Mail though, one for each user, so it is no longer necessary anyway.  You do need to add the -MS commandline option.

1.  Right click on the WinPMail shortcut and select "Properties".

2.  Select the "Shortcut" tab.

3.  Edit the "Target line" to add the commandline option.

A commandline option will generally look like the following:

c:\pmail\winpm-32.exe -i thomas -MS

"c:\Program Files\pmail\winpm-32.exe" -i thomas -MS

I upgraded to 4.51 and Pegasus won't start because "the user you are attempting to become [vefatica] does not exist".  PMAIL.CFG is still where it belongs; it hasn't been modified and still points to e:\mail which contains the vefatica mailbox.  I could some help fixing this.

Strange, an upgrade should not have changed anything in your setup.  Verify that you really did upgrade the version in the same directory as the pmail.cfg by running PMail directly from the same directory.

That's the funny thing ... I didn't see evidence that anything in the setup was changed (other that it simply not working).

I did start it sirectly from the install dir and it showed the 4.5 splash.

I worked around the problem by doing a fresh install (non-upgrade) in another directory, making the required admin user, and then adding users with the old names.  Their mailboxes were found and all's OK (I guess).

But I'm still quite curious why the upgrade didn't see the old mailboxes.  As I said, PMAIL.CFG wasn't touched and pointed to e:\mail\~8 which is correct.  That file was in the same directory as the EXE so why didn't Pmail find the mailboxes?  Is it true that PMAIL.CFG is still **the** way Pmail locates user mailboxes?

Strange, my only guess is that for some reason it did not find the e:\pmail\pmail.usr file.

I

another directory, making the required admin user, and then adding

users with the old names.  Their mailboxes were found and all's OK (I

the EXE so why didn't Pmail find the mailboxes?  Is it true that

PMAIL.CFG is still **the** way Pmail locates user mailboxes?

Absolutely.  The program first reads the pmail.cfg, then looks for the pmail.usr in the root of the path spec.  It then scans the pmail.usr to find a username match and get the rights and finally goes to the matching username and reads the pmail.ini file.  If it can't find the matching directory you get the error.

If the pmail.usr file does not exist it will go directly to the users directory to read the pmail.ini but if the pmail.usr file exists and the username is not found then you get the error as well.

The use of the ~8 instead of the  ~n though could also cause this same problem if the username was longer than 8 characters

Thus wrote TRS: Strange, my only guess is that for some reason it did not find the e:\pmail\pmail.usr file.

I'll say!  The PMAIL.USR in place now was **created today**.  Apparently something in my configuration caused the upgrade to delete the old one (which I suppose was there since Pegasus has been working for many years).  Do you know of anything that would cause the deletion of that file?

That is in contrast to today's upgrade on another, identically-configured (I thought) machine where the PMAIL.USR in place now is the same one that was there before, created 2005-10-19 and modified 2006-01-10.

Not a thing would be deleted in mailbox directory with an upgrade, all of the files would only go to the program directory.  I have no idea why it was deleted.  If you had always been running as single user maybe it was never there.

Hmmm!  I've had two users for a long time, me, and "deleted", to whom Mercury-filtered stuff goes.  I look at deleted's mail now and then to see how my filters are working.  So there must have been a PMAIL.USR.

I read this thread a couple of times.

Tried to install 4.51 over 4.41.

Same/simiar problem. Have spent hours on this.

Also tried install to a new directory. Works if I add  -admin  to command line.

Otherwise says    no user SHELDON on this system.

When running 4.51, Tools -> Options -> Basic  , WinPmail crashes.

Win 98SE

Reinstalled 4.41 in its old directory - works fine.

Help appreciated .

Thanks, Sheldon

I tried upgrading today to the 4.51 version also, from 4.21 and I get the same "the user you are attempting to become [Brian] does not exist" error.  From reading this post, it doesn't sound like there's a real solution to the problem yet.  I tried the pconfig as suggested on one of the replies, and that didn't help.

My files are actually at c:\pmail\brian\brian

I have tried moving everything to just c:\pmail\brian also and that didn't work.

Finally I gave up on 4.51 and restored my backup so I'm running on 4.21 again successfully.  Any help appreciated.

1.    Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info and note the home and new mail directory.  Should show c:\pmail\brian\brian for both.

2.    Go to the program directory and run pconfig.exe it should show c:\pmail\brian\~8 as the HOME and NEW mail directory path.

3.    Look in c:\pmail\brian and you should find a pmail.usr file with a single entry with a;brian;<your personal name>

If this is not correct i suspect that the upgrade to v4.51 will not work properly.

I have just upgraded to V4.51 and find that in the previous version in the File 'drop-down' menu there existed a 'change user' (just above the exit)

so you could quickly toggle

between my different email addresses I use (5 mailboxes)

This has 'disappeared' in v4.51 and now it looks like you have to completely 'close out' of each email address and then log back into each email address

separately each time----- can we have this 'change user' feature 'added back'?
