What happened?

Apparently the file ..\Mercury\Mail\PMAIL.USR had been damaged. It's difficult to say why but unless you had a Windows crash recently it might be good to run Chkdsk and to make sure there is no real-time antivirus program scanning the Mercury directories.

Indeed!  I had trouble with that file disappearing a couple weeks ago when I installed Pmail 4.51.  I used Pmail to rebuild it but didn't add the user in question.  Mercury must have already had the user info and so didn't miss it.  Do both Mercury and Pegasus rely on that file?  That seems odd.

For a long time I've had a mail user to whom Mercury v4.62 delivered mail from a group of forums.  My newsreader, Agent, would POP these emails from MercuryP.  Yesterday, Agent started telling me that the POP password was invalid; Mercury's display said the same thing (no log file, darn it!).  When I went to Mercury's "Manage local users", the user in question did not appear in the list.  The user's mail directory was present, in the right place, and with PASSWORD.PM in place and showing the correct password.  When I tried to add the user again in "Manage local users" I got a system error sound when I closed the dialog (user already there?) but the user still did not appear in the list (?).  Restarting Mercury didn't help.  After manually deleting (actually, moving) the user's mail directory, I was able to re-create the user and all's well now.  How could all this have happened?
