Disconnecting / reconnecting new mailbox. How etc.?

[quote user="Thomas R. Stephenson"]

It will open but in the case of a memory stick the drive letter must match the drive letter used when creating the original added mailbox.  The hierarch.pm used the drive letter of this mailbox.

I really can't get it to work that way, even though my stick always has the same drive letter (B:) . Every time I close and re-open Pegasus, I have to go to Folders | Add mailbox to list to view the added mailbox, whereas if I create a Public folder, it'll show every time I open Pegasus, regardless of whether or not I've plugged in the memory stick. (Of course, I'm only talking about the Public folder tree here, not about any actual mail folders inside it.) However, I don't mind really, as the Public folder option works just fine for me.

On this page http://community.pmail.com/forums/post/78.aspx, in response to the q. "Question: How do I archive mail folders? If I later need them, how would I be able to access them?", there is advice on adding a new mailbox and transferring message files to folders within it, following which you "Disconnect this Mailbox"

The arricle continues: "if and when you want to access those archives, you can reconnect Pegasus Mail to the directory and you'll see all the folders in the Folders window"

Does anyone know how to "reconnect"?

Thanks!

Use the same "Add mailbox to list" to reconnect.  If these are copies of the original files use the utility.

PMRestArch - Pegasus Mail Restore Mail Folder Archives:
http://www.lexacorp.com.pg

Usage:
PMRestArch SourceDir DestinationDir

Description:
Pegasus Mail cannot display two mail folders with the same internal ID even if they are in separate mailboxes. Mail folders also have to be Read-Write.

This causes problems when trying to view mail folders which have been archived by copying them to backup media.

This utility:

1.  Copies all .PMM and .PMI files in the source directory to
the destination directory and renames them as BAKxxxxx.PMM
    and BAKxxxx.PMI.

2.  Ensures that the resulting file is Read/Write.

3.  Creates a different internal unique ID for each file.

Once you have run this program to restore archived folders to a directory you can attach that directory using the Pegasus Mail 'Add mailbox to list' option and access the archived folders in this new mailbox.

Okeydokey Mr Stephenson, spot on, thank you (again)!

I'd archived folders using different names so the "Add mailbox to list" route worked just fine, and I've transferred all the messages I needed to.

I also downloaded the utility you mentioned (for other readers' info the current URL to this page of free Pegasus kit is http://www.lexacorp.com.pg/lexacorp_utilities.html)

This forum (or Mr S) has rekindled my long-standing impression that Pegasus is THE email prog.

Is there any way to retain the existing filing tray structure? As far as I can see, this is lost when attaching a mailbox, and if this is recreated, it is lost when the mailbox is disconnected.

The tray structure is held in the hierarch.pm.  If the program is closed with the attached mailbox connected then the tray structure of the attached mailbox will be saved as well.

But this doesn't mean that Pegasus automatically mounts this mailbox on (re)opening the program, does it? At least in my case, this type of mailbox (which I have created on a USB memory stick) doesn't automatically appear in the folder list, which is why I have created a public folder on my USB stick, and this folder does appear automatically whenever Pegasus is opened.

Edit: On a somewhat different subject, I've noticed that all my copies to self that I copy to the mail folder in the public folder on the USB drive appear in bold, as though they are unread. It isn't a major problem, because when I move the messages from the USB drive to the folders on my computer at home, the mail filter rule I use for that is configured so that all messages are marked as read first.

It will open but in the case of a memory stick the drive letter must match the drive letter used when creating the original added mailbox.  The hierarch.pm used the drive letter of this mailbox.
