Problems with attachments

I followed all the responses that had come in, and now it appears that using all of the answers, the problem has been solved.

I do appreciate all of the respoonses. It worked. Now I need to get rid of my second version which I installed to send attachments.

Please help!

I have been a loyal Pegasus user since it started. I am tempted to find something else because all of the sudden my attachments are being encoded. I have tried every setting change I can think of and it still encodes the attachment and creates bytes and bytes of gibberish.

I never send any attachments that need to be encoded. I've always selected the type of attachment (word document, txt, jpg, etc.) and selected unencoded. Recently it doesn't matter what I put in, it comes out as a mess. The person on the receiving end gets an "enncoded message".

I've uninstalled and reinstalled. When it's a totally fresh install, it works ok.

But here is where I know I'm causing the problem. After I install I go back and put in all the mail files from my earlier install so I can see all my old mail. (I copy in the Mail folder.) It's then that it messes up. I know that when I start copying the archive, I'll have problems, but since I run a business, my old messages are important. They often are my only record of information the buyer has provided me.

At this time, I am forced to run two copies of Pegasus so I can continue my "archive" of messages, but I have a fresh install so I can send attachments, when necessary. It's a pain!

I am hoping I can locate the file that is causing me problems and delete it but I don't know where to start. If I can figure out what's wrong, I can get rid of the second copy of Pegasus and use it as I did before this problem started.

Dear Sharon,

First of all, it is important to know that most attachments to emails HAVE to be encoded. Only plain text attachments can be sent without encoding. Today, binary attachments (such as word processing files, pictures etc.) are sent using the MIME standard (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions). On the receiving end, all modern mailers will decode these attachments automatically, so many users will not even be aware the attachments were sent encoded. Pegasus Mail will normally chose the correct encoding, so you can leave the setting on "mailer decides".

It may as well be that you chose inadvertently "UUencoded" which is NOT "UNencoded". UUencoding is no longer used by most mailers and will therefore only rarely work.

I think you can just continue working with you fresh install and have access to your old mail using the "add mailbox to list" out of the "folders" menu. Just point to the directory where your old mail is stored.

Johannes

I went back and worked with Pegasus more today. The problem is that Pegasus is selecting uuencoded for all attachments no matter what I put in (or if I leave it up to the program to select). That means messages which should have had an attachment end up with multiple pages of coding.

I tried to follow the suggestion from Johannes but I couldn't get the "add mailbox to list" to work. Since my fresh copy of the program works fine I thought this (from the users manual) might work:

If you have previously installed a copy of Pegasus Mail on your computer, the setup program will detect this and will offer to upgrade the old version for you. If you update your installation in this way, the new version of Pegasus Mail will use all your existing mail settings, folders, addressbooks and other files. If you would prefer to run both the new and old version in parallel for a while, you can perform a fresh install using Setup, then copy the file PMAIL.CFG from the old version’s directory to the new location – this will allow both versions to access your mailbox.

I was hoping I could use the new install and still access the archive of many years of messages stored on my old Pegasus installation.

So I tried it. I copied the PMAIL.CFG file to the new copy of the program, but as soon as the PMAIL.CFG file from the old install was moved, the attachments no longer worked. Since the PMAIL.CFG shows the program where to look for the files, I'm back to square one.

So far my best solution is a pain. I have two versions installed. I use the old version except when I need to add an attachment. When I need to send an attachment, I close down the old version, open the new one and send out the message (usually it means copying the message in so I have the "send to" address.) To be certain I have a copy in the "sent mail" area of my old installation (since that's where my archive exists), I have to send a copy of the outgoing message to myself.

I close down the new installation and re-open the old install. I am able to "receive" the message I just sent out.

Then from the old install, I pretend to send it it again, but before it goes out, I delete the "about to be sent copy of the message". That way I have a copy in my on-going archive. That's the only way I have found to maintain a copy of the message I sent in my old version archive. The whole process is time-consuming and there has to be a simplier way. Thank heavens I don't send more attachments.

I will probably eventually give up and just keep the old version as an archive in case I need to refer to something previously received or sent. But with a complete archive going back to about 2003, I hate to do that. I'm always using previous messages.

I was hoping it was just a corrupted file or bad setting. But since it's buried in the PMAIL.CFG, I'm lost.

I'd still appreciate suggestions.

Hello,

Tools/Options/Outgoing Mail/Sending mail, make sure that Advanced Settings Send attachments as separate files IS NOT checked

Hello,

Go into menu Tools/Options/Outgoing Mail/Messages and Replies, and make sure Use Mime options is set on, secondly in the menu

Tools/Options/Outgoing Mail/Sending mail, make sure that Advanced Settings Send attachments as separate files IS NOT checked

HTH

   Martin

This original question/problem seems to be a two part problem but I am concerned with the attachment part of it.

I have been using pmail since back in the dark ages and have never had a problem sending a zip file but now find myself having the same problem
as the OP with the message coming through with what should be a zip file attachment as a uuencoded mess included in the message.

I thought well the new 4.51 will fix it so I upgraded with the SAME results. NO JOY.

The Tools/Options/Outgoing Mail/Messages and Replies/Use Mime options is set to on.
The Tools/Options/Outgoing Mail/Sending mail/Advanced Settings Send attachments as separate files IS NOT checked.

I have tried all kind of different settings with the "encoding" with no joy.

PM uses "mailer decides" on both by default but that does not work or I would not be here.

It simply HAS to be something simple as I have never had a problem UNTIL now.

From what I've seen, uuencoded files are pretty much ancient history anyway.

WHAT am I missing please?

Thanks in advance .....

PROBLEM SOLVED! . .....

On the "special" tab of the message before I send it, the "Use MIME features" had gotten UNCHECKED somehow!
I checked it and ALL is right with the world again!

Thought I would leave all this message I was going to send as well as the solution for posterity as I was checking over everything
just one more time before posting when I discovered the "dirty rotten scoundrel" LOL! I knew it was something simple and it was!

Hope it helps someone else .....
