Very S-L-O-W to delete emails...

Here is another option you might try.  The reason that deletions are so slow is that it is moving each message to the "deleted" folder, and this takes time.  Even if you normally allow messages to go there, you can bypass that option by holding down the <CTRL> key while deleting.  You can select a whole group of messages by using <CTRL>-A or by using your <CTRL> or shift keys while selecting message to delete, then hold down the <CTRL> key while deleting.  This bypasses the deleted folder altogether and is almost instantaneous.  Be careful, though.  When you do this, the messages are gone forever.

Help!

I'm using version 4.41.  Whenever I try to delete any emails, the response is very slow.  If I ask it to delete any significant number of emails at a time, it slows down to the point of a dead stop.  At that point, any click anywhere on the desktop returns "not responding", requiring a closing and restart of the program to continue.

I've check and found that "some" of the list I had highlighted for deletion are actually gone, but most of them remain.  I can delete about 5-10 at a time without this hang-up, but I often require deleting several hundred at a time.

This was not a problem in earlier versions, that I recall.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just in case.

Check the number of emails in your "Deleted Messages" folder. It might be very high and full. Depending on your settings, every time you delete a message that message may be added to your "Deleted Messages" folder. That may give the feeling that PM has stopped working - just give it some time and it may actually recover. However, you may want to empty the "Deleted Messages" folder first.

Depending on how important deleted message may be, you may want to check and adjust the following settings to your needs:
Under Tools -> Options  check:
- General settings -> Basic settings -> Preserve deleted messages until PM closes
- General settings -> Advanced settings -> Deleted messages folder persist between sessions

I have both options set (as I need it) which accumulates a lot of deleted messages and naturally slows the system when deleting. However, from time to time I need to e.g. empty my Junk mail folder. To do so I first temporarily remove the tick from "Preserve deleted messages until PM closes" (above), then delete all the messages and then put the tick back.

Generally speaking I would suggest that you move to 4.51. I had similar Problems when deleting a large number of emails especially in 4.41.

Hope it helps.

Cheers

Thomas

I had this happen when I installed Microsoft Security Essentials......if this might be your issue, I can figure out how I fixed it.

Just let me know

Thank you guys!  Issue is resolved.

I tried emptying the "deleted" folder before trying to delete a few hundred.  Of course that didn't work because it hung up trying to empty the "deleted" folder.  (duh).  Then I deleted the "deleted" FOLDER itself.  That worked fine, allowing me to delete a couple hundred or so...until it got clogged up again...within minutes.  But unticking the option to preserve deleted mails was the ultimate answer.  Now, deletions are almost instantaneous.  And it is a simple matter to turn that option back on again when PM is just running in the background so that I can peruse the deletions that my filters perform.

Plus, I painlessly updated to v. 4.5

Thanks for your help!
