I have been using DOS PMail since who knows when 1987 at first with A UUCP connection. Thus my directory structure was very non standard to suit UUCPM.
Every time I upgrade the process trashes my ability to see the original folders created. In the past more by luck I have managed to hand craft them back again.
Knowing that, I don't know what ever possessed me to do this again without a current backup because this time after a day I still am utterly confounded.
Each time I start up I get a NEW set of folders and attempting to add any is just as futile.
I have trashed and replaced every file I thought important but am missing at least one ;-) Or making a huge mistake somewhere.
I even constructed what I think is the correct new install directory structure and modified the PMAIL.CFG, PMAIL.USR. PMAIL.INI. STATE.PMJ, HIERARCH.PM not all at once but keeping a copy each time for very good reason. PMAIL just trashes some of them and writes a new set of files file for the PMAIL.INI and HIERACH.PM. Obviously I have missed something.
I know this is because the interrelationship of files and exact syntax are not understood well but I can't find any reference to this problem anywhere. Worng key word probably but curse me after helping if this is at all possible.
I am so desperate I am willing to switch to another program if I could import the email.
What what file holds the key and appears to be the defacto reference that over-ride every other configuration? I also need to know exactly where any configuration file must be placed as due to many previous attemtps....
What am I missing?
C:\PM32\MAIL\USER is my current path
the USER path is ..USER\MAIL+MBOX
Is there any recovery tool that will check the configuration and at least point to errors rather than being grossly unhelpful by trasing and overwriting?
PMAIL just brings up a new install window or trashes the files I have placed there ignoring completely what is an error. In both cases I am left without my mail folders which still exist.
Which file points to the location of the email folders that is supreme that causes this trashing an rewriting to happen.
Regards
Peter
