Aliases and Mailing lists not working?

I'm not all that sure you'll be all that successful.

If you got a fixed IP address and registered host name then you could bypass the ISP assuming that they do not block port 25 outbound.  They should never block port 25 (either inbound or outbound) on a system running a mail server.

It's the norm for all mailing list servers.  The From: address is the original senders email address, the sender should be the mail servers email address.  Here's the edited headers of a major mail server running LISTSERV.

Return-path: <owner-pmail@bama.ua.edu>  <this is the original connecting MAIL FROM: address>

I am having trouble with aliases and mailing lists not working or not working consistently.

I has several aliases which point to an external email address, and mailing lists which contain external email addresses.

These work just fine if the originator is internal (or, in the case of the mailing lists, a member of the list) but dont work (or dont work consistently when the originatior is external.  The mailing lists are set to accept posts from anyone.

When failure occurs I get a relaying denied message.

What _should_ happen - should mailing lists and aliases be blind to the sender's origin.  What I want is for some mailing lists to be accessible to anyone, and aliases ditto.

 Setup is:

 Mercury s-p-c-d v4.52

Any advice/help appreciated

You are sending the mail via MercuryC.  It appears that the relay host is complaining about the sender not being a local address and so you are trying to relay off the host.  Generally is MercuryC is authenticating to the relay host this does not happen.  Check you MercuryC setup.  If it's correct talk to the owner of the relay host you are using with MercuryC.

Thanks.  I spoke to my ISP who confirms that mail forwarding is working

I think the problem can be seen from the header.

Our domain (for which forwarding is enabled on our ISPs smtp server) is bisopsstortfordtc.gov.uk.  here is the header:

It looks like my ISPs smtp server checks only the from field.  This shows a non-local domain (ie the domain of the originator) so is rejected.  The local domain is only present in the Sender field which obviously the smtp server does not respect.

Is there any way to fix this in mercury?

Have you turned on authentication in MercuryC?   Usually an ISP will allow relaying by an authenticated connection, have you asked them if they allow this?

Yes, authentication is on.

They say the problem is the mailer program.

Do they know that you are running a mailing list server that requires that the From: address be a remote email address and only the sender field will show the local address?  If they only allow yuor one local domain to send then the only way you can do a mailing list server is via the MercuryE bypassing the ISP (assuming they are not blocking port 25) or use moderated list where all mail is sent from the local moderator.

They do know what we are doing, but I am struggling to convince them that they need to solve it (the isp is British Telecom)

Sending via mercury e doesnt work - see the post: 'Cant Get Mercury E to send'!

Is the way mercury behaves the norm for mail list servers?  if so it gives me more ammunition.
